A new head unit won’t do much for the rears either. The door cutout is for a 6.5” speaker. Toyota put a 2.5” speaker in a 6.5” baffle. Only way to get more sound is to swap them out for “real” speakers.

I already did. My truck actually had 6.5" stock speakers but I replaced those with the same size. Makes a tiny difference but the sound is a majority to the front speakers. This is because of the factory HU from everything I've read. Heard the same in the 2018 and 2019 identical model Tacomas as well.

Wow! Toyota went with real speakers, but left the hamstrung head unit. Figures.

Not sure which years/models you're referring to but I've seen the '18 and '19 TRD Off Road 4x4 models that came stock with 6.5" rear speakers also. My '22 rear speakers were suprisingly not made of paper either. Still had a tiny magnet and ligh/cheap though.

‘20&21 had the tiny speakers. I remember when the ‘21 arrived there was one thread here. The lady was pissed that there was “no sound” from the rear speakers, and she was going to return her truck and “never buy another Toyota”! We asked her if it was that important, why she didn’t check first…radio silence. She did say she was going to start a class action against Toyota for false advertising though. Funny stuff.

    *edit*
Went looking. Didn’t take long to find. Funny read for your morning.

Ha! She's not the only one displeased about the crappy audio systems. Seems Toyota would have to be aware by now how many of their sh** speakers are just wasted by people installing new ones and throwing those factory ones out.

That adapter ties into the +12V power on the back of the headunit. The red wire is the +12 ignition switched and the Yellow is +12V memory. I'm not sure if it would be the best idea to use this power wire for your subwoofer because you might blow the audio fuse unless your amp is pretty small.

I did not install a sub. Only installed a small 4 channel amp for the 4 door speakers.

Amp circuit on the factory radio is, I believe, 10A. Not sure what the Key amp is, I think 30A. So not only are you overloading the stock wiring, you’re not getting full performance from the amp. It’s like trying to suck an olive through a straw.

Okay, my point was, the amp needs a dedicated power cable from the battery. Whichever amp it may be, I’m sure it draws more than 10A peak. That’s all.

Been following this thread. What amp did you go with? I was looking at the key amp but was curious about what else is out there that people are using with success.

Yep, I connected the power for the amp directly to the battery.

    I went with this one.

After reading about the Kicker Key amp, I wish I had bought and tried that one. But this Sony definitely improved my sound all together.

Thanks I want something I can put in the dash out of sight. I did order the harness that DirtyGovnuh listed so I will see how that works out. It was cheap if it doesn’t.

This one easily fit right behind the head unit. And that harness should work fine as all you need to do is cut it in half, connect the colored wires correctly on the same colored wires that come with that amp and plug them in. If you have any questions, just let me know as I feel I've already learned how easy it is.

Confused about the "from the amp back to the speaker plug behind the radio".

Seems like all you would have to do is cut the harness in half, male end plugs into the back of the radio and splice the wires into amp harness on input side. Output side of amp harness gets spliced into the female side of the Red Wolf Harness. Female gets plugged into the factory harness. Power and Ground ran separately to battery and ground location of choosing, remote turn on not used.

Did I say the same thing you did, just with way more words or am I missing something? TIA.

Not the one you asked but I think you have it right. I don’t think of it as a “T” but a series harness. It seems you are just adding an amp in line. I have the red wolf harness I just need to buy the amp.

Thanks. Seems simple enough. I just picked up a second hand 180.4 yesterday. I didn't realize that the mic that came with it was broken when I picked it up. PM me if anyone with a 180.4 is willing to let me borrow the mic to set the EQ. I'll gladly pay for shipping both ways.

If I can find an amp I will gladly let you use mine. I’m having trouble finding one. I think Best Buy has them but it’s a couple of hours away.
