Any engine biulder would recommend the same. I do it cuz I've been a professional mechanic for over 30 years, makes me 'feel' better.

.....funny thing, I started this thread as a joke after a few beers yesterday, some folks got pretty serious!

I even go as far as placing these Moroso pre filter screens between the filter and cyl block filter pad . These pre filter screens protect down to 280 microns

That moroso accumulator I jokingly suggested earlier is a killer add on for race motors. I never see less than 40psi at startup on my 604bbc

It will restrict the flow causing your engine to self terminate

I’d bet on a 280micron pre filter reducing flow far less than a 5 micron paper filter

Oil filters are a scam to get you to buy extra stuff you don’t need started by big corporations. You will get the best lubrication if you bypass your oil filter completely allowing the oil to flow unrestricted. Your engine will last 500k. I promise.

rotated tires changed oil threw out the old air freshener.
Remember when filters were changed every OTHER oil change.

Save a quart of oil each time ;-)

The old-skool helicopters rocked those disk stack-up filters for the transmissions, Bell, Boeing. some planes still use them for the primary airframe fuel filter.

I pull the filter every month and if that pre filter works as intended it will trap metal shavings and quickly allow me to see if the engine is hurt

Yes that stainless steel screen won't affect oil pressure

It does a bit as 'pressure' is resistance to flow however the disks are quite efficent with a high flow rate

How often do you change it out? Is it by mileage or when all that's left is the cardboard?

Cool I'll start on that tomorrow morning. What kind of MPG did you gain? Is this the rumored Prius mod?

I've done oil changes for this generation Prius for a relative. It was also super difficult to remove the filter housing. I redid the oil change after 10k miles and it was difficult again. I was the last person to touch it. Its just the way its built apparently. I did resort to using my impact gun for removal. I have a Tundra with a similar filter housing, no issues.
