I did an oil change, 27k last one was at 21k. I’m glad I did it myself because it looks like it was never even done before, oil looked like black tar. Only time will tell. But the filter housing has these springs on the bottom I was kind of half paying attention and I assumed it got pushed in when fully tightened so i didn’t push it all the way down. It did kinda click and felt right but does anyone know if you’re supposed to push it like all the way down or what? I think I might have to take it off. Any idea how much oil I’ll need after just draining it from the filter port?

Dont know about fitment, but just drain into a clean measuring cup and pour back in when you are done.

Best to take it apart and be certain that you did it right for peace of mind. It should be about 1/3 qt. total loss. Catch the oil in an empty pan and pour it into one of your empty jugs if it has the clear window down the side if you want to really be exact - but your dipstick will be the best answer.

I think I know what you're talking about. It is the metal spring on the side and that is in case the filter is loose it doesn't start to back out resulting in a massive problem

I saw that too but these are inside the housing where the bottom of the filter meets it. I just wast really thinking about it till after because I’ve seen filters that don’t stay down until you screw it in.

Yah you’re right I’m gonna just check. It’s not that bad, 10 minutes for peace of mind.

Now - the best way to get an accurate reading on the dipstick is to pull it out enough to break the o-ring seal. let it sit (best overnight) and check it in the morning before any start up. Works every time !

The metal tube has tabs on each side that should be resting between two plastic tabs on the housing. If it's just sitting loose in the housing then you need to push the metal tube down below the plastic tabs and turn it so that it locks in between them.

This is the metal housing, but the plastic one is the same idea.

@19OR I don't see how yours could be different unless it's aftermarket... Here is a photo inside of a plastic housing. I've had an '18, '19, and '20 Toyota with a 3.5L and they're all the same...

Metal tube pushes down beyond the plastic tabs, turns, and locks in between the tabs.
