Is it a waste getting a TRD Pro if I know I’m going to lift it

SSO hybrid bumper, Warn winch, RCI skid trilogy, RRW sliders, everything in the cheap/free mods thread, and of course the frame recall work.
I got an OR and have been thinking a Sport would have been a fine starting point. After the lift, skids, sliders, and all the other mods the only stuff that remains of even the OR package is a bedside sticker that does nothing, a rear locker that is unnecessary, and the MTS / crawl control that are not needed. Throwing that much extra cash at a pro just to mod it all away? No way.

    • If you buy the Pro, every monthly payment will be a painful reminder of the money you agreed to piss away.
    • If you buy the OR, every glance at the bed decal will be a reminder that "its not a Pro."

Its really up to you to decide which one is more painful. Welcome to modern decision making. :cookiemonster:

So here is my take on this. If you get a pro, then I would do minimal upgrades, like a 1 inch spacer lift in front and a add a leaf in back. Keep the factory suspension. This will give you the lift and the truck is still stock.

If you are dead set on a new suspension, then get the OR. You save easily 10k and you can do way more upgrades than a trd pro comes with for less than the difference.

Factory skid plates are no where near as stout as the aftermarket steel plates.

I agree. a 2.5-3 inch lift is perfect with 33's.

I went the OR Premium route and it is awesome. I also have leather seats and the jbl stereo which kicks azz, I did all the mods you are talking about and spent less than 8k doing it.

Fine. They're not great but not terrible. Aftermarket skids will do better.

    Front Grille
OEM 300$ or so, aftermarket options exist for about 150$.

    LED Fogs
These are about 500$ aftermarket. That said, for that cost aftermarket, there are a TON of better options. The stock Pro fogs are shenanigans.

    Badging
I won't lie I don't like badges and stickers. That being said, these are 25$ and are the pro-style badges for the off road.

    Leather and Sunroof
Can be had on the TRD OR

I have an off road, if I had to do it again...I'd be in an V6 crew cab SR, and build that up whatever myself. I won't say I regret the up-trim OR, but I would go down trim next time (MAYBE SR5), and do all the fun bits aftermarket instead.

I bought my OR right before the pandemic exploded and am vey glad I did. It got a good deal on a very capable 4WD truck. But there was also a nice Pro also available to me for not that much more than I paid for the OR and I sometimes wish I had just bit the bullet and got the Pro as they are bad ass for sure. But today's situation is quite a bit different as the delta to get a Pro over an OR is beyond what I could stomach.

I will say this OP; get what you want as you only live once brother! Just don't put yourself into crazy debt to do so! :)

Go with SR-5. Use the difference to fund a Roth IRA. Or get TRD Pro and leave it stock. It'll go just as good if not better than a lifted taco.:anonymous:

You’re paying what 10,000 more for fox shocks? Makes no sense and if you’re going to lift it more than likely you’re going to go with a different suspension anyway. Your situation sounds like a cheaper option would be better.

God forbid your truck gets totaled, the money spent on the mods is lost whereas the Pro gets the full value since many of those items you put on are stock. I.e skid plate, fog lights, headlights, exhaust, side mirrors, suspension.

I also read many posts, as like you may do too, how someone is selling their modded truck and the consensus is to remove the mods and sell them off because not only will you only get stock value for the vehicle many don’t even want to consider a truck that’s been modded. Nobody seems to factor any of this in when they discuss Pro vs alternatives.

Resale value - you don't get money back on your own mods.

    I can speak from experience — I’ve owned a 2016 TRD-OR and now own a ‘21 TRD Pro.

I bought one of the first 2016’s to come off the production line and really enjoyed it. I tried to convert it over 5 years to feel like a Pro since that model didn’t come out until 2017, plus I loved the Barcelona Red. Some of the above replies are really good — and if you are planning on doing most of the upgrades yourself then get the TRD OR Premium. That way you get the electronic bells and whistles and seating upgrades but you’re not spending money on things you’re gonna take off. RCI makes great skids if you want something better than the OEM Off-road metal one. The TRD Pro skid is pretty, but a PITA to work around. Also the Pro has the silly non-functional hood scoop. I made mine at least do something useful by embedding an LED light bar in it.

I wanted to wait for Barcelona Red to make its rotation back to the Pro models, but it doesn’t seem like it ever will. So I just bought a Black Pro and am giving it subtle Barcelona Red accents as an homage to my old ‘16 Off Road.

I bought my Pro because I wanted the stock Fox Shocks and factory lift. I plan on installing the Westcott suspension upgrades once my 36K warranty runs out. I am not building an extreme truck, I am focused on it being reliable and capable. Because its my daily driver, I wanted to be able to enjoy the fact that its my dream truck, be reliable and tuned from the factory as-such, but not have to deal with troubleshooting extreme mods. Basically I want this truck to be fun and not frustrating.

The reality is the engine, transmission, and 85% of the vehicle is the exact same between the OR and the Pro. You’re paying for a Pro VIN, and the special edition factory upgrades.

The totaled pro will bring better wreck value, not by much. However, my off road is way better equipped. My skids will not get wrecked when I hit some rocky trails. The pro skid can be wrecked. My sliders are bolted and welded to my frame. Much better than what you got. My transfer case skid is steel. My long travel suspension has more...well...travel. My steel grill will stop a rock. I much prefer kings to fox. I have had both and kings can take much more continuous off roading. They don't overheat as easily. I am sure higher end fox shocks would be comparable. I much prefer my leather to cloth. I am pretty sure I can get more for my shocks and skids than you can for your components.

Don't forget, the pro and the OR are the same truck with different suspension components and a prettier front skid plate and grill. The important off roading drivetrain components and electronics are identical. But you are paying 10-15k for a badge, a grill, $2000 suspension upgrade and an aluminum grill that can be wrecked. If the pro was 5-7k more it would be justifiable. At 10k plus, to me it's not.
