What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

What did you replace it with?

 

A belt out of a parted out Taco from another TW member - works like new - still have the old one may try the re-tension trick and pass it on

 

Replace LED lights with halogens (orsams nightbreakers)

cleaned up the engine bay with a nice rub down

 

Well I've done the daily mod, long ago actually. But I did the next most important mod, the shop mod.

I’m biased, but I’d say go for the color match.

I had to sand and paint the chrome trim on the corner lights, but I love the way it turned out.

 

How long ago did you do that & how's it holding up? any good tips for painting the chrome?

 

Looks like a great space to work in. Is that black panel like a story board?

 

Did you mean air impact? An air ratchet won't get that near tight enough. I want to say 210ftlbs is the spec. That is one nut where torque is fairly important for bearing life. I don't torque mine but make sure it's plenty tight with a breaker bar.

I like the open bed look on mine so much better than with the Wildernest on it.

 

It's been painted in chalkboard paint yeah.

 

175 ft/lbs but yeah, if he used a ratchet then he'll want to take the wheel and cap off and tighten it down. My bigger torque wrench broke so I use my smaller one and get it to 150 ft/lbs, then use hit with an impact to give it another quarter turn or so.

been there done that with wheel bearing failure due to improperly installing the axle nut, it's not fun

 

It’s been almost five years now, but the paint over the chrome has started to fail over the last year or two.

The moral of the story is to not be lazy like me and only do a token bit of sanding on the chrome. I’m fairly positive that with better prep, they would last much longer and look better. But they lasted at least three years with my crappy prep work, though, so there’s that.

 

Was out wheeling yesterday and heard a loud pop. I was going up a icy ledge and was locked front and rear. After the pop, Front passenger had no power when I locked the front. When I unlocked I was essentially in 2wd and every now and then I could hear some nasty noises. I then threw it in 2wd and got tugged out of the trail. At first I thought I blew a CV, but I was able to drive home (1 hour drive). I haven't tore into yet, but now I'm wondering if I fucked up the diff. Any input or ideas?

 

If I'm a gamblin' man, I'm going with: front pass axle decided to split...

 

When I blew a CV it was similar...while in 4wd it sounded awful but was able to drive it in 2wd. Didn't go very far before swapping it out though. Have you looked underneath at it? Should be pretty obvious if the CV looks OK or fubar'ed.

 

I'm hoping that's all it is

I took a peep. It has side to side play and the boot tore too. I'm going to swap the axle and go from there.

 

Are those something you can just buy or did you find it at a part out?
