Was told by dealer that my Transfer Case was bad and would need to be replaced, they didn't have a supplier that could provide one in the immediate future- apparently Toyota doesn't make them anymore . Can anyone share insight into getting a Transfer case or where to start looking ?

    ADD is automatic differential disconnect
If your 04 is stock you have elect ADD
J shift is the Manual Transmission
If you have a 4wd button you'll need that Tcase.

It can be tricky to find just the right TC for your truck. I went through this ~4 months ago. There is no single part number for these TCs as far as I can tell, you just have to find a TC that matches your exact setup. For example, I found a J shifter TC that matched my 96, but it was from a 1997 and the position sensor wire connector was different (fortunately, we were able to rewire things to still use this connector).

I assume rebuilding your existing TC is not an option?

okay I think i got it - I have a J shift Transfer Case with ADD - (no push button 4wd on the smaller shifter and Im not aware of my hubs locking manually)
I would be open to rebuild it just not sure where to start - Dealership didnt offer much help.

If you find a TC without the 4lo switch just remove the plug on donor and screw 4lo switch from old Tcase in.
    Connect existing wiring.
Youll need a Jshift without button 00 thru 04.

What symptoms do you have? Did the dealer give you any more information on why the transfer case was bad?

Do you know what you may have done to it? Run different size tires in 4wd? All the gear oil leaked out and you didn't replace it?

I'd suggest calling some local transmission shops and see if they're able to rebuild it.

not really sure, also not super knowledgeable about what may have caused it and - I had the clutch replaced about 2 years ago and truck is basically stock with 220k miles. The dealership did mention that it was very low on oil/fluid and that it had likely leaked out.
It started making severe noise the other week - best way I can describe it would be that it sounded like something was loose and created a knocking noise (pretty loud - like hitting the gearbox with a hammer - atleast that's what I imagine from inside the truck) - so I took it to the dealership and they wanted 3k to replace it with a used one from a junkyard that had 230k miles on it. I didn't think it was worth that much so I drove it home and parked it and trying to figure out next steps.

Identifying a transfer case can be difficult. I just went through it myself and put together a bunch of info on how to identify the case you need based on the specs of your truck.

You can see it here. The image I've included below is just one of many helpful diagrams there.
1st gen Transfer Case Identifcation for Replacement / Swap | Tacoma World

And this is a write-up on how to replace the case. It's not a hard job and you can save a bunch of money doing it yourself.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Talk to your local Transmission Shop you might be able to get it rebuilt pretty cheap.

Much cheaper then anything new and you know just what you have.
