Looking for makers of dual swing-out rear bumpers. Going to be towing a boat so a dual swing-out is necessary. Not looking to go high clearance at this time. THANKS!

I called CBI and talked to Ally this afternoon and came on TW for more research; I thought I would chime in since I tow too and my main concern with aftermarket, swing arm bumpers is the hitch receiver. I confirmed with CBI that the plate is on a hinge and the tow receiver is there so your Taco retains its factory tow rating with the bumper (less the added weight of the bumper of course). I was looking at Victory 4x4's setup until I learned that you lose the hitch receiver. That is a definite no-go for me since I will be towing most of the time.

CBI doesn't offer install services but if you call and ask the operator for someone who can help you with product questions they'll email you a list of dealers in your area.

Yes, this is going to be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Always me, having a need that departs from what is available. Onward, through the fog...

I thought the victory 4x4 bumper also has a hinged plate with a hitch receiver behind it. That’s what it says on their website at least.

If you watch the rear bumper install video (on Victory4x4's website), duder in the end says the bumper is not rated for towing. I have in writing from CBI that their bumper is rated to tow as much as the stock rig is rated for.

Well damn, that sucks! Their website made it sound like it is rated the same, just not “officially”.
Wonder how cbi got the official rating.

An update to my earlier post about CBI...

I have an email out to them because the product page on their website says that the CBI bumper is not load rated but I have in an email a company rep saying it is, and the hitch receiver integrated into the CBI bumper can handle what the factory rates the Tacoma to pull. I sent another email out asking CBI why their webpage says differently than their response re: load rating. This seems a bit fishy to me, like a liability thing.

    Update:

I am impressed with CBI Off-Road's responsiveness. I talked to a rep yesterday and traded a couple of emails and had answers within minutes. Credit where it is do. I'm impressed. Here is what I have found:
    • CBI Bumper has been field tested but has not been officially load rated
    • LET THE BUYER BEWARE CBI says that they have field tested and recommend staying within the limits of your Taco's tow rating and the bumper will be good. BUT the product page clearly states that the bumper is not load rated, so if something catastrophic happens as a result of the hitch receiver on the bumper failing, you/ your insurance are on the hook
    • I'm willing to bet most off-road / overland bumper fab shops are the same way, they field test but don't go through the arduous and expensive process of getting the bumpers load rated.

Here's what I'm going to do: I'm going to buy somebody's bumper once I research this thoroughly. THEN I'm going to affix my trailer's safety chains to other chains I have affixed to the frame, not to the bumper. Big honkin' chains, high quality chains, service factored to at least 3.0. That way if my trailer breaks loose, or the bumper breaks loose, or the hitch receiver on the bumper fails my boat's trailer is still safely tethered to the truck's frame, just like the stock towing hitch allows me to be. So, from a liability standpoint I have done my due diligence. And because I have, my insurance will back me. So DAMN the torpedoes, FULL SPEED AHEAD! I do like that bumper pictured above.

If I include the bumper (and all my other got-to-haves) under additional equipment coverage then insurance will buy me a new one, less deductible of course.

Guys, REPLACE that boat trailer winch strap. How old is yours? Mine was 17 years old. Replace the transom straps too. TURNBUCKLE your boat's bow D-ring to a HEAVY DUTY eye-bolt you install under the D-ring. A VERY heavy-duty turnbuckle too. It does no good to retain the trailer if your boat can't hang on to it as a result of the violence of a trailer uncoupling.
