Upgrade to a 2nd gen. The lead times are less than a day in most places. Pull that trigger Cory. You can be cool like us!

Definitely not upgrading to a 2nd gen. Waiting for the parts I'd want would take forever. Plus I already have big boy suspension to throw on the Tacoma while it's down. :spy:

I mean you don’t need a engine builder to get the head gaskets done. Usually a week or so turn around. Maybe just find a mechanics shop to get it done

I could but an engine with lower miles on it is very appealing compared to throwing mine back in with 270k on it.

I get it. Just saying options. Not sure what’s more important to ya at this point. Getting it back running/on the road or finding a different motor(which could be a while). Sure ideally it would be both, but that sounds like it might be hard to work out.

I definitely appreciate the extra options. Still weighing my option between JDM and rebuild. A local JDM engine importer has 5 5vz-fe motors coming in the next 2 weeks, so I'm going to keep tabs with him and go take a look at those when I can. If nothing looks good after that, I'll talk with the engine builders and schedule a drop off date for my motor.

That being said, motor is coming out next weekend.

Years ago, I weighed options in the same fashion. Swapped the motor and a week later, it cratered.

You can’t always know where the engine came from or how it was treated. Even tho it was low mileage. The seller took care of it but doing a motor swap twice sucked.

A rebuild should inspire more confidence but the same could happen there as well—I do believe (hope?) the risk is lower.

Rebuild is definitely the direction I'm leaning towards even though things are bound to take at least 3 month if nothing goes wrong, parts are available, and heads aren't cracked. JDM Engine Bay is the one place I've had probably the best conversation with. He's willing to let us do a full inspection and as well as he'll do a compression test and leak down test to see how healthy the engine is once he get's it.

Both right now are a crap shoot. One is going to take longer, but also could take far longer assuming parts are unavailable or something is found that needs to be replace, while, like you said, the other could just blow up on me a few days later.

There are definitely no easy answers. Unless, of course, your neighbor totals his and says "take the motor" :D

honestly bro don't worry about the engine have 270k on it.
When I got my truck I didn't know that it had like 215k or something due to an odometer roll back and had a burnt exhaust valve. Put a new head on there rather than having it rebuilt for like $600 and had it done in a weekend.
Still going along just fine at something like 300k now I would guess. These motors don't care about mileage.

Rebuild will definitely be the cheapest. rebuild it and then just run it for all it's got left to offer.

I'm looking to get some cab rust and door rust taken care of on my '90 pickup, along with a paint job. Any recommendations? Preferably north bay or along 80 on the way to Sac, but I'd be willing to go further if needed for good work, fairly priced.

See I could, but my anxiety just says no. So far I'm pretty set on getting the engine rebuilt unless a JDM option rolls up that is too hard to say no.

I did the head gasket leak test with the kit I rented at O-Reily’s. Tested 5 times and all resulted in no leaks or blown head gasket. Next thing I’ll do is to replace the water pump. If that doesn’t solves the overheating…JDM or a wrecked Taco is on the list for me as well. Maybe keep the old engine and slowly rebuild it.

I’m off tomorrow if you wanted to swing by Oakley. This weekend I haven’t even thought about what I’m doing. Prob won’t be driving the truck anywhere far. Need to replace my pads and rotors to hold me over until later this year when I get my BBK!
