We did the full ecu reset procedure and it still didn't take. Might've been that it's a key from a 17 model year; think some software updates on the techstream sw might've stopped that procedure from working. Had a Toyota master tech doing it he knew the whole deal.

So I looked into doing this myself at home with techstream and I'll save you some pain. Turns out most of the techstream cables and software on Amazon (J2534 cable/OBD) are bogus. Techstream said most are pirated from them. The software is outdated and the cable doesn't have the right drivers. I just spent an hour on the phone with Techstream and they confirmed it. They also only support Mongoose (and one other cable)....if you look it up, it's around $500. It's for a business, so it makes sense. I did purchase the pro diagnostics and such, but still is worthless without the right drivers. So it won't connect to vehicle. Oh well.

The tactrix cable works with techstream and has drivers. Good info over here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/ecu-tsb-update.562550/

Just ordered the Tactrix cable. Overall, it may be a little more expensive than going to the dealer (they all bs about the cost of software upgrade as 1 hour). But, I honestly want to have control and independence from dealerships.

Not looking good for me for my Highlander, Toyota changed the ECU and key IDs from earlier models.
The card key works with multiple key IDs so maybe I’ll get lucky.

I don’t want to buy a new key without being sure it will work.

Are any of you guys with tech stream and the ability to program used keys in the Tampa Bay Area? I’m thinking of programming my Taco key to work in the Highlander and replacing it with a new key if it works. I’d love some help with this, I don’t have access to a windows computer to buy the techstream myself.

Hey victory where do I find the ecu in my tacoma assuming they haven't moved it too far from 16 to 21. I want to check its P/N before I spend a couple hundred bucks on a new key

Easier method; use the parts catalog to find your vehicle and match it up with the older models.
Tearing it down might be a headache

it is to the left of the steering wheel behind the useless small cubby.

before you do all that work, pop open your key and post a picture of the circuit board.

This is a great idea, but the 2021 and 2022s do use a different part number. This may just be to differentiate the fact that the passenger door works with smart key, but frequencies are still the same, or it may be that Toyota actually did change the computer :notsure:

Yeah it's the same except for the 4/10 but I assume that's a batch number or something

I think you are with the credit card key, if you current key is the same which it appears so, no reason the new key won’t work too.

Ok so the 2021 TRD OR does in fact have the TMLF 12-1 Denso unit. I don't have any pictures to prove it but I'll try. I just looked under the steering column with my flashlight was able to read it no disassemble required so for those looking to do this mod I recommend checking to be safe. Victory is probably right though if your key is a match you shouldn't need to worry about it.

So it's this long slender black box just above and adjacent to the fuse box
    upload_2022-2-21_13-21-57.jpg
The put the serial number on the inside part so you have to get your face in between the fuse box and fuse actual denso unit to read it but it clearly says
    TMLF 12-1

Sorry, I’ve been busy and slow to update but I did get confirmation without you having to tear in to your truck. It’s in the owners manual, for 2021 it’s on page 79:

Also I’m certainly not an authority on Techstream, but it appears you will need the latest drivers to program for 2021, the techstream purchased from Amazon may not work.
