What's closed about it? Most modern engines don't need to have their valves adjusted (thanks rollers and/or hydraulics) so why include it? I also would wager most in the 70s didn't either. The vast majority of those cars would have had hydraulic lifters by that point.

What is it with some people raining on my parade? Am I the only one who communicates with service department reps? (I'm kidding, don't answer that) LOL

First let me elaborate, I told the Service Rep, I left the wheel lock key in the center console. As I went into my truck to check, it was not there...so had I not checked, I would have had to come back to the dealership to retrieve it. (Lesson learned FOR ME) It's best to ask questions while things are still fresh on people's mind. The service tech retrieved my wheel lock key.

This isn't my first rodeo as far as ToyotaCare is concerned. I've given a testimonial about my first visit which prompted my initiating dialogue with the service rep. I always find it beneficial to build rapport with the people taking care of my vehicles...kinda like when you interact with your waiter at a restaurant...unless ONE doesn't eat out for whatever reason.

I plan on going back to the same service center and be like...on a first name basis...like when you go to a bar and you're a regular and your drink is prepared as you sit down.

I wouldn't call it paranoid...just highlighting genuine concern and bringing people into the fold regarding this subject.

    Thanks for the dialogue...All Good!

    Ed

Couldnt agree with you more. I always serviced my own vehicles but time has become more scarce. Also, a 4x4 tire rotation can be rather cumbersome in the driveway. Sure you need to drop the vehicle off and wait but usually I have the lady come with me and we can knock out some errands while we wait. Thankfully my dealership is rather quick if you have a scheduled appointment.

    +1
About half as many cars as you, but same on new vehicles.

And slightly different post dealership experience.

Our '97 Taco has never seen the dealership since I purchased it new. Has been wrecked twice, considered totalled once, insurance paid me half what I paid for it 23 years later, purchased back for $900, fully repaired for $4k and has over 255k miles on it now. My son drives it primarily now.

Our '16 Corolla, I negotiated in lifetime oil changes, and so far in 6 years, no problem getting free oil changes and so far it's good work performed. Plan to sell it eventually and get the wifey a new 4Runner.

My '17 Taco has only been back for recall work and a service software flash update.

Lol you swim in a very small tank just like me. On your next trip around town, take a look at the drivers of all the vehicles. Now think, would that person change their own oil? Do ten cars.
I do this all the time. My judgement is below 5% of people (which matches Jiffy Lube's survey) actually will maintain their vehicle themselves.

Agree 100%. I have fellow engineers who don’t maintain their own vehicles or homes and it’s not because they have money to burn.

A very long time ago, someone told me it is a good idea to do at least a full engine oil and filter change within a very few thousand miles on either a brand new, or rebuilt engine, to get out any excess wear particles that are more likely in a new engine than once it get's broken in. Same logic for anything that has mechanical friction (transmission, gear boxes,...) so I have done a complete fluid change on every new vehicle I have purchased over the last 20+ years (it hasn't been very many vehicles).

Apology accepted although, you're entitled to your opinion.

I was being a slight smart-ass with some of my comments and for that I apologize too.

It seems there are plenty of stories to back up the perception of dealership service departments. So much so that threads have been initiated to express the frustrations with ToyotaCare.

There may be isolated instances of a negative culture in the Toyota Maintenance arena. I don't work for Toyota nor do I endorse the Toyota brand.

I do however, own a 2021 Toyota Tacoma Sport that I am proud to call my own. Maintenance is an integral part of longevity in ownership; something I try to keep as a standard for every NEW vehicle I have ever owned.

How we convey that important FACT is each individual choice. The only way I have tried to learn is from experiences from others.

    Ed

Yes, to test out how your dealer handles themselves. Some good, perhaps many are bad, you get to find out!

    Work in progress...
I lube the drive shaft and rotate the tires every 5,000 miles. I change the oil in the summer for sure out here, but, if I traveled close or over the 5,000 miles in the cooler time I let the oil change wait until spring or 10,000 K. We are 120's in summer and low 30s in winter so it depends when the miles come up.
