In other news, it's upgrade day.

My beloved 50in plasma TV which I have had since 2009 has had two pixel controllers give up the ghost resulting in a crosshair like pair of lines on the screen. Time to let her go. Picking up a 70in 4k LED from Sam's in a bit when the kid wakes up from her nap. Nothing fancy, some budget range Vizio that rtings says is a good deal for the price. We don't watch a lot of tube - it's mostly the kids Cocomelon machine and the stuff we stream is certainly more image quality limited by the stream than our local display equipment.

 

I'm really disappointed in my LG 4K. Bought a C7P in early 2018 and just under four years later the color red is basically non-existent.

The price averages out to ~$400/yr as-of today, but if we only count time that it functioned 100% correctly it's more like $800/yr; either of those averages is unacceptable for a freaking TV set that isn't some Black Friday Vizio upscaled 1080p "4K" garbage set.

I'm moving to a larger place and have been considering upgrading my TV, but seeing prices around $3K for a 77"+ set has me thinking "fuck that" based on this current TV's longevity.

So now I've moved on and am considering 4K projectors so I can get more square footage of 4K picture for my money.

Any of you guys have a projector that is "pretty decent" or better? I've seen some Optomas around $1,600 that are native 4K and have seemingly decent specs, but anecdotal advice would be welcome.

 

I love the LG 75" QLED I got Nov 2020. I still am in awe of the picture.

 

It's always 2 steps forward 3 steps back with me and trading. So I give up lol. I've got an appointment tomorrow with a friend of 20+ years who's been a financial/investments planner for 15. So I'm just gonna give him all my trading dollars cause I'm just too impulsive at the most inopportune times. This is my step 1, trading has been gambling for me for too long.

My research led me to believe if you want longevity you're gonna be in the 2 to 3k range with Sony or Samsung and don't bother with non OLED.

 

But I looooooove OLED.

Does Sonny/Sammy have an OLED-like technology that can do crazy contrasts?

 

I think you misread - I'm saying their top-end OLED stuff is what you want.

I personally have never had good luck with LG anything. Had a blu-ray and surround system from them a while back that would randomly freeze when playing some discs. Updated firmware, called LG support, no help. Thing just refused to ever work 100% correctly. Eventually got rid of it.

 

Oh yeah, missed the "non-" there.

Fuuuck. I love my 50” Panasonic plasma that was also purchased in 2009: I originally bought a Samsung DLP, but after multiple repair calls under warranty Samsung offered me a 75” Mitsubishi DLP or a $1300 check. I took the check and got my beautiful wonderful steadfast plasma for $900. I dread the day itll need replacing since it seems i’ll need to spend a ton to get similar picture quality
