Shocks and springs w/ 80k on them = EOL. Far better getting that kit @eon_blue linked to. It's a front and rear replacement kit. Don't over think this.

I gotta ask- why do you need new coilovers so badly? It would be far better to save up and get something nice than to throw budget parts at the truck now, and have to replace them in a year.

Mine are totally shot. I have the money, but I am trying to be as economical as possible as I have too much invested in this truck lmao. I think I will just move forward with some good stuff. The best feeling in the world is a good deal and I am chasing that hahaha

Look past the used coilovers (unless you find used Kings, ICONs, etc.. and have them rebuilt) and Monroe/preassembled junk then- You're after the Bilsteins. Hands down the best bang for the buck. You're going to end up replacing a used coilover or part store assembly all too soon. No sense in spending money twice.

Also another question - are these trucks stock with coilovers? Or do they come stock with struts? I just want to replace what was OEM for my car like I said. I don't understand suspension at all.

Coilovers, only. Get them pre assembled with new springs. No, no, no to the struts.

Did you read the link I provided you earlier?

It's fine if you don't understand suspension at all, but we can't do all the work for you.

Coilovers and Struts are used in different suspension applications.

Every 1st gen (6 lug) Tacoma came from the factory with Independent Front Suspension (IFS) with Coilovers. The rear is a Leaf Spring with standard shocks.

5 lug trucks have completely different suspension components and they are not interchangeable.

Companies like Monroe for some reason call their product a "quick strut", but it is in fact a Coilover.

Bilstein 4600s are what a lot of these trucks came with stock, you'll have to order springs to go with them though..unless you plan on reusing your old springs up front. I would get new ones so you know it's all fresh and new. A lot of the front spring recommendations on this site are for lifted applications, if you want to retain stock height you'll probably have to source a set of OE springs through a company like Monroe or Rockauto. Then have them assembled with the Bilstein 4600s or 5100s, whichever you decide to go with.

If your leaf springs are original then its probably safe to assume those are gonna need to be replaced, too. Companies like General Spring make stock height leaf packs for these trucks

I would be wary of buying any used stock leaf springs as most of them out there by now are 17+ years old and probably not much good

Not even factoring in the weight differences of the diff gen...it's not worth it imo.

It's better to just think og 1st gens and 3rd gens as completely different trucks.
Exactly. Anything that's used at this point is a minimum of 17 years old.

Honestly even $50 for those coilovers is too much especially with those crap spacers. When I upgraded my coilovers, I GAVE my friend my old 5100s with stock coils. They were better than what he had, but they still weren't really worth anything.

Guy in that craigslist add probably tries to sell his old balljoints, too, lol.

I know that it should not be done, but if you just swapped the 3rd gen top hats to the 1st gen top hats wouldn't that in theory work?

IF all else was equal. Shock length, coil diameter, lower attachment bolt size, etc.. Sure.

But I'd be willing to bet that's not the case:
3rd gen on the left, 1st gen on the right.

I ordered radflo coilovers with 550lb springs for my 2004 double cab. I don’t have any extra weight up front, so I didn’t think I needed the extra coil lbs. I also have a new Alcan leaf pack. All this is going on a truck that has a fab 6 lift. When I bought the truck it already had the lift, so now I’m just working around it, to make it how I want it.
