It is up to you and the communication between you and your dealer. He can track it to the best of his ability. Either way, it is built and should arrive in about 6 weeks, maybe less or more if it was just built. Call him and ask him when it was built. You will not be able to tell build date with a permanent VIN. Only a temporary VIN gives the build week. It’s built so the worst part is behind you and your truck should arrive before long.

The dealer told me it would be built January 25th. As of last week I was told it wasn't built and they have no idea when it will be. And if it is, I'm sure the trucker convoy will fuck my delivery up because that's my luck. If it was just the truckers causing a delay I wouldn't care. But all this covid shit that kicked it off is what's annoying

I’m not sure I or anyone else here can help with that, if the person you’re talking to won’t discuss timeline or tell you anything maybe start looking at other dealerships would be my best guess. I’d gladly be wrong about the “no one can help with that” part though. Hope your luck changes soon dude

Temps VINs are assigned once the production sequence of the vehicle has actually been assigned. You can enter it into the Toyota owner's site and it will show the basic configuration. That number disappears from the system once the vehicle hits the production line and an actual VIN has been assigned. The dealer sees the vehicle on the Dealer Daily system within about 24 hours of production being completed and has access to the VIN that's been assigned at that point. If they can provide an actual VIN, the vehicle has already been built and is somewhere in the transport sequence.

Dealers can track the progress of the transport through the Dealer Daily. Of course, many factors can impact the transport process and the system provides a window for each step of the process. My truck tracked with the earliest of the dates for each step. My dealer emailed me a screenshot of the Dealer Daily from time to time to keep me informed. Any dealer can do it...few do.

Bottom line, though, is that if they give you a VIN and then tell you the truck hasn't been built they are lying or totally inept. Actual VINS are not assigned until the truck is on the production line and dealers don't have access to them until the truck has been completed. I'd be wondering if they sold your vehicle to someone else and just pushed you back into the waiting list for another allocation they'll get at some point.

This is one of my truck's updates to give you an idea of the info they have access to.

Thank you for all this info, that was really helpful. This gives me hope that there is a possibility it will be here within a month or 2 and chock it up to shipping delays across the board. Obviously this also means there's a possibility i may not get a trail edition this year if someone else is actually getting the truck they gave me the window sticker to, but im an optimist. I am going to contact my guy at the dealership and ask him to send me a screenshot of the dealerdaily report and see what he says. Let's hope he's just been inept so far. When I asked him if I could add factory fog lights he assured me the trail edition comes with them lol.

Thanks again for taking the time to write all that up

Once my temp VIN was reissued with the real number I logged into to toyota app, got the vehicles phone number and tracked it that way.

I talked to my dealer and asked for a screenshot of the dealer daily report and my salesman just texted it to me. It says the truck is in transit and he said his guess is that it will be at the dealership within 10 days! Now I know how my luck is and I'm sure the freedom convoy will probably cause significant delays for my truck, but im an optimist so we'll see lol. I'm just happy to know it's definitely built and in the US and it'll more likely be weeks rather than months

I feel for ya man but let me put your problem in context:
We are getting ready to shut down the assembly line of a major OEM because we cannot get our pumps and motors. The reason we can't get them is the sub suppliers can't get the parts. The reason for THAT is the foundry can't get the iron and copper ore.
Bottom line? Nobody knows when we are going to receive our pumps and motors. Our customer wants answers. We do not know.

That's wild and I'm sorry to hear that. We're definitely living in crazy times right now. I should note that I'm not just bitching because of delays. It just seemed like everyone else I talked to that dealt with the allocation system now has at least been given more info than I was. If my dealer told me in the beginning that they had no idea when it would be coming that would have been fine. But they assured me by February 23rd the latest because that's when my lease is up. Thanfully I was able to buy my lease out and wait however long I need to, but the point is, the communication has been poor.

But the good news, I assume you didn't see my post from earlier, is that the truck is already built and is listed as in transport

So I got a vin on the build sheet they sent me when purchasing the truck. They told me the dealer system said its going into production march 9th. I just happened to call at the right time and they said let me look online for what I specifically wanted, and they were getting one sent. Will I get a different vin when they make it? I loaded the VIN into the toyota app last night and it pop up as what i purchased. Does that mean possibly mines already being built or do they have a vin that far ahead of production (15 days now but 21 at time of purchase before production date).

(i do not work for toyota, and the information in this post is assembled by me from across the internet and personal experiences and I may be incorrect and its not my fault if I'm wrong and you do something with my wrong info, yadayadadada)

I've circled the most important things for @LunarRockV or any other interested member. The image with this data is at the bottom of my post.

    dealerCategory:
    A = allocated F = freight G = ground
    A: allocated
F: Your truck is on a boat, or sitting in a port, or possibly on a train.
G: Your truck is on a truck being delivered to the dealer, or is at the dealer. Not the same as transported (train, boat, tooth fairy, etc).

    eta:
This one is not populated for you. This is tied into the same system the dealer sees. If the dealer doesn't have a concrete date for you, this is why.

This is how it appears for other VINs:
This is a range of dates of when their system EXPECTS the vehicle to arrive.

When I was waiting for my car, I checked the ETA daily. When I started checking, the range was 1 week. With bad weather and other delays, the range was pushed back 2 weeks (still 5 business days).
As the date got nearer and nearer, the date range shrunk to 4 days, then to three days. The ETA can move forward or backward for other factors as well.
If Toyota pulls your vehicle for QC check, this date range could be pushed back 30 days very quickly.

    holdStatus:
If this is marked "DealerHold", this means the Dealer has marked that they want to receive the vehicle (they aren't trying to trade it, etc, etc). If you have placed a deposit or have reserved this vehicle, seeing "DealerHold" should be somewhat comforting. (for those who don't trust verbals)
    isTempVin
others have explained this already in this thread
    isPreSold
If you have placed a deposit on a vehicle or have reserved it, I would not worry about this flag. When I placed my deposit this was never 'true' for me, and I have not seen it marked 'true' for any other VIN I've looked up.

The rest of the options are pretty self-explanatory.
