Can someone explain to me why you don’t use overload with HS 3 leaf aal?

Pardon my ignorance, just trying to learn the reasoning this isn’t okay, but the 1/2 in shims are. That being said, I have seen where some people did in fact leave it in place. What’s the thought process?

 

I am running the HS 3 Leaf AAL. The reason why the stock overload spring is removed is for off road performance. With the OL spring removed, the 3 Leaf AAL gives the spring pack the right amount of progression. If the OL spring is left in, the progression is to high. It made a big difference off road on my truck compared to stock spring with OL.

 

what year truck? I left it in on my 2011 OR. my original pack is just the 2 leaf with overload. I left it in for just a little more lift. you would have to bend the springs pretty negative to hit the overload. on mine anyway.

 

I’m in a 2009 DCSB 4x4. Does swapping the OL for the 1/2 in shims affect how much weight the bed can handle before it begins to sag?

 

Many AAL's have you discard the OL

I think the HS AAL kit is due to the brackets and sizing of the springs, the OL would contact them.

Typically you'd never reach OL capacity with AAL's unless the spring is wildly worn out.

I'm running no OL on my custom AAL setup simply due to wrong hardware lol.

Also if you keep the overload in you can still bolt up the e brake cable.

 

I think I’ve decided to go ahead and pull the OL and replace it with headstrongs recommended 1/2 inch shim. Seems as though this allows the progression to work as HS engineered, while still giving me 2in of lift vs 1.5. I don’t run a shell as of yet, but do camp often and load the bed down, so I’ll follow up with ride and lift results once complete and settled. Hopefully the weather is nice this weekend so I can get it done soon.
