I shouldn't have said completely disengaged, I meant partially (as in almost disengaged in that feathering stage to get the truck moving). Sorry it's been a long day. I definitely can hear it more when I'm giving it some gas though, I didn't think it sounded like it was stalling. The noise does stop when completely disengaged.

yeah then it could be just a near-stall, even when you're balancing the clutch / in the friction zone. Curious to see what your dealer says.

If your revs are in the 800rpm region or less under load, like backing up a hill, it is the engine lugging. Lugging can still happen when silpping.

If you are getting this often, check out the 2LM:

Yea my 07 will make a deep rumble/vibration when I'm near stall. It got worse seemingly out of nowhere one day and figured out my spare tire wasn't fully tightened in its spot so the vibration of the engine would cause it to move and made the noise louder/deeper.

If I get my truck back today I'll definitely check the spare. That thing seems to have a bad habit of coming loose even before I put the bigger tire down there. PITA. Thanks for the reply.

Yeah. It is great anytime that you need to creep along in 1st or Reverse. Also great if you want to do the 10mi 4WD exercise on roads with curves.

Well I'm currently a little embarrassed. Apparently the culprit was my skids. I went driving this weekend to check out the current state of the rivers in my area and I guess a bunch of rocks and dirt got on my skids and compressed into some corners which was causing the noise at low speeds (similar to the tire suggestion). Thanks for all the tips and suggestions guys, if nothing else that 2wd lo mod is looking very interesting!

Haha, nah he was super cool about it. They didn't even charge me. I think some of the guys in service just dig the truck and I got lucky, just about every time I've called them to make an appointment they see I have the manual and make a comment about how I got a unicorn. Probably just blowing smoke up my ass but I'm not above flattery.

Do the 2lo mod. Its killer.

Plus you can flex on all the "domestics" at work who don't have 2lo :D

Honestly the only thing that makes me sort of hesitant about it is that I'm still under warranty. I guess if I did it I could just hide the button or name it something else, no one else drives the truck.

While I have you all here... Any recommendations for a new shift knob? I don't mind the stock OR one and I don't like the TRD enough to warrant paying for it but I'm interested to see what all everyone has. The TRD 6-speed shift knob keeps popping up in my Amazon recommendations and I like it but I feel like the white would look sort of out of place in my silver/black truck.

I was just thinking about this today while I was drifting in 3-4” of snow in an empty unplowed parking lot. The truck will literally fail to increase wheel spin in 2nd gear at ~1200 rpm while nearly floored in 4hi. I never experienced anything quite like it with my Subaru (my only other awd/4wd vehicle with a manual transmission). Granted it’s not an apples to apples comparison.

It just seems like the engine just refuses to produce torque at modestly low rpm when asked too. And it does seem like it is just refusing to produce as opposed to not being able too. My extra throttle inputs seem to be ignored. It’s not knocking or surging and then when the rpm is just a little higher it screams. It’s acts different than the engines I’ve had previously. And yes TRAC and VSC were disabled with the long push.

It seems like the engine is either trying to protect me from itself or protect itself from me.

It doesnt bother me as much during normal driving; only really when I am driving for fun.

    Should I get the tune?

Do you still have the skinny 33's on your truck? I was thinking about getting some for my next set of tires but there's so few options and most of them don't look like they would be great in the snow. I have load C range 265/75r16 Duratrac's on right now and like them a lot but they don't make a skinny 33 unfortunately.

I don’t have my skinny 33’s (Dick Cepek Extreme Terrain M&S M/T) on right now, but i have driven them in snow extensively and overall they are an improvement over the stock wranglers I have on currently. They just suck for daily driving; loud, slow, and harsh. Can’t wait for to take them out adventuring come summer.

I do still have a set of ST Maxx 255/85/16s but I only run them in summer. Some guys on here wheel them off road in the winter and say they’re great but there’s no way you’d want to drive them on-road in the winters here. I run 265/75/16 Blizzak DM-V2s because there isn’t a 255 skinny winter tire from any manufacturer. Going to 285s opens up a ton of tire options which is why I’ll probably do the CMC

My skinny 33’s work great in winter, but I’ve never run dedicated winter tires. For most of my life I ran all seasons year round.

The mud terrains just suck for daily driving and there are very few off road opportunities in the winter in Minnesota.
