Sooo...Toyota put 6 washers on my oil drain plug from factory?

Sorry everyone, I was going to post this back in the day but I got busy...

So I received my truck in the end of May 2021 and after enjoying it a bit, I did the first oil change a few months later and when I went to put the drain plug back on I noticed something weird.
After dumping the oil, I went to put the oil drain plug with the new plug washer the bolt wouldn't catch a thread.

When I looked at it I thought that it was a threaded bolt on the outside and inside, but upon further examination, it seems like they just slapped on 6 oil drain washers to the plug.

I wonder if it was a disgruntled employee or my truck was made on a Friday haha... no harm I guess...woulda sucked if it was on its last threads and then gave out though

(The picture shows 5 but 1 fell in my oil jug and I wasn't going to fish it out :) )

:eek:That’s fucked up. If the drain plug backed out and the motor ran dry the dealer would never believe it was Toyota’s fault so color yourself lucky!

There should’ve been a lot of eyes on that between assemblers, inspection, and pre-delivery. Have a hard time even thinking it’s possible

Proof you don't need to change your damn gasket every time. Good catch op. I'd at least be inquiring at the dealer to see what the deal is.

    I don't think mine's ever been changed.

If you spent some time working in factories you would understand the how -- the why is more the head scratcher.

I’m taking this as confirmation… since covid, the quality of products and services has gone off a cliff. Looks like no industry is immune to it.

Seriously fucked up. I’d be taking this way up the Toyota chain.

more crush washers = less leak. Cuz they crush into each other. It's science. The metal bonds on a molecular level.

Thanks for the comments...ya, I wish it was a joke, the weird thing is it seemed it was so tight that I needed to use pliers to take them off... It's almost like they were fused together.

There was no harm done so I figured meh, and to be honest, I didn't have a great experience speaking to Toyota Canada about the pro headlights, so I figured I'd get the same response or even worse, them saying it was not them at the factory and possibly me, and that would get me super upset.

Everything else in my truck seems to be ok...now I haven't done the rear differential, I'm hoping to do this, this weekend, but from what I can see, they only used one washer.

    Thanks for the post/pics.

Definitely weird, but glad no harm was done. If you'd have used your 'free' oil change you'd have never had the privilege of finding that!

I'm sure there will be posters along telling you to 'demand' reparations from Toyota. Extended warranties, oil changes for life, even a new truck will all likely show up as ideas.

That will be as much fun, or more, than your actual find! :D
