lol I had a camper shell on my Toyota p/u. It was a couple inches too short so there was constantly water back there. Kept my stuff dry for the most part though.

 

its hard to get a camper shell thats water tight with out droppin a lot of money

yep. I took a garage door seal (goes on the bottom of the door. tube like made out of rubber) and super glued it to the bottom edges of the cap. That seemed to keep the water out from the sides. it was just the 2" gap because the cap was too short. Try that guys. It worked and was relatively cheap.

 

It's not bad..Just some drops on the one side. I was planning on painting the shell to match so I put the roof rack up there without sealing it but I haven't had the money or desire to color match it yet haha

 

I have not. My Katadyne has a carbon filter in it. Tastes perfect. First few times it tasted like plastic but it was new so it isn't an issue now. My friend has the MSR sweet water pump system. It is ok. If I had to purify a bunch of water it would be nice. I am really eye balling the First Need filter. I have heard a lot of good things about those.

I have kind of wanted to try the pen light purifiers but I just don't trust the very well. Mainly because... how do I know they did the job?

 

I just use the Katadyn Water Purification tablets.

They kill everything a purifier does plus some, and they weigh less than an ounce for a week's worth of drinking water.

If I'm faced with a situation where the only thing around is stagnant or dirty, I usually filter it through a bandana to get the big stuff out and then occasionally double-up on the tablets. You're not really supposed to do that, but it's more for peace-of-mind.

A friend of mine has an old PUR filter that we use sometimes. Most of the time I camp in places with plenty of fast-moving water (usually from snow runoff) or alpine lakes anyway, so the chance of contamination is slim.

 

love that spring and mountain run off water. So cold and tastes so good.

 

made the mistake of drinking water that "looked good" hahaha i had the shits for a month but i have drank water that was way worse looking and i was fine so idk what was up......i always add iodine now

 

lol yeah. I have only drank water w/o filtration or anything once and it was because I had to. somehow got myself lost mountain biking in Montana. It was a fast moving stream off the snow caps on the mountains. dank little bits at a time.

 

I did the same thing in north carolina, ended up grabbing some water out of a stream as high up as we could go and still find it running clear. I survived that time. That is also the reason I am no longer allowed to lead, I misread the map and what I thought was an easy 12 mile day hike turned out to be a 20 mile hike. I may have forgotten to add in one leg of the trail... oops.

 

this place I was at was on an Indian reserve (grandparents are Indian). Someone told me the trail just looped around the lake. Being 15 at the time, I just said ok cool....and thats when I got myself in trouble.... lol... that was also when a grizzly bear came out of the trail 5 mins. after I had finally gotten out.

 

that could of been bad...thank god we dont have grizzly bears out here

 

lol yes. I would stop every so often because I was so worn out, be sitting there and the hairs on the back of my neck would stand straight up and I would get this feeling that something was watching me so I had all this adrenaline built up, I took off out of there as quick as I could and once the adrenaline wore off, I had to stop again. Then another adrenaline rush. It was pretty freaky.

Lesson Learned: don't listen to other people when they tell you about a trail, have a map, study your surroundings. I should have tuned back once the trail started to head away from the lake.

lol yeah! they are... interesting.. apparently these "tree tents" are becoming fairly popular.

 

I just ordered a Campright bed tent. What does everyone use in the bed to sleep on other then the air matress?
I was thinking just a cot would be fine, since it sits high, I can still tuck a few things under it.

A friend recommended a Thermarest, would one of these work out in the truck bed even with the raised "rigdes" in it?

 

I use a pop up camper mattress right now, it works great but doesn't fit inbetween the wheel wells right now. My plan is to build a platform this spring tho.

I've used my thermarest in the bed, and I have those same ridges. It works but its not the best! a simple foam pad would help the problem a lil tho. A cot and the thermarest would be ideal!
