My 17 is fine, but I use S5 almost exclusively. I'm on 33's so 6th is never going to happen except for downhill or tailwind situations. Even stock, or closer to it, I used S5 almost always to really cut down on the shifting between 5-6th gears.

Cruise Control is crazy in D mode as well, but I'm pretty sure I just have a philosophical difference of opinion on how Toyota implements CC since my wifes Rav on CC acted just as dumb. CC in S5 is much more sedate with regards to shifting and holding high RPM's. I don't use CC much anyways, never have.

the only issues i have found with my 2019 Sport. is when you are at cruising speed (2000 RPM) and you decide to overtake another vehicle and press that gas pedal. there seem to be a fight between the throttle and the transmission, on who needs to act. they cannot decide to keep gears and open the throttle or to keep same throttle but lower a couple of gears. so the vehicle stays unresponsive for at least 2-3 second and then reacts. you get use to it i would love to try a tune unit and see what im missing.

Before purchasing, I rented a SR-5 Auto for a weekend. I didn’t pay much attention to the tach or to what the tranny/throttle were doing. Overall it drove fine and I had zero complaints.

I wound up buying the 6-MT, but not because of any dissatisfaction driving the auto- I just prefer stick.

Only had my 2021 for 6,300 miles or 6 months but i can live with it just fine. Its maybe pissed me off about 5 times where I yelled "FKN transmission" and think i had many other problems that day.

Only time it is really noticeable is cruise control on a hilly or slightly incline area, its effing awful there and just engage it on non-elevated straits or downhill. Plan to get the tune maybe in another year or two, since it seems to drive fine why change.

I have 2019 SR5 I think it shifts just fine, hauling a trailer it hunts a little bit on hills, but nothing crazy. But if you are looking for something that "speaks" to the driver in you this is not a WRX and never will be regardless of the transmission. It's a truck and it kinda does truck things, my Camry is more exciting to drive, but my Taco takes me places over the rocks and through the woods.

I'm thinking of getting a manual at the last minute. Not because I want one, because I want to somehow say 6MT in every post. I also want to point out how I prefer it and that I'm somehow more of a man for having it.

I thought about a manual, but you can't get it with a push button start... priorities.

    Still thinking about it.
I wonder how many “tuned” Tacoma are in used circulation by now…

I picked up my '21 with 12,000 miles and the shifting has been fine. If I don't like the way it is behaving on some terrains, I put it in S mode.

I have 10k miles on my 2021 and initially, it didn't bother me, but lately, it's started to annoy me. Particularly in the morning where it seems to almost "bog" when trying to pull out of my neighborhood. I don't know if it's the cold weather or what. To be clear, it's not the motor bogging, it's the transmission hesitating and shifting up when it should be downshifting. I don't get it.

It's a lease so I had no plans to tune it but now? I am considering it.

It's my first automatic after driving sticks for 25 years.

I'm 96% happy with it around town. Sometimes it upshifts too early and falls on its face after jumping to 4th when you're still accelerating, then you end up pressing the gas more to continue accelerating, then it downshifts.

About 75% happy with it on the highway. Wish I could lock it in a gear to keep it from downshifting all the time. I love the low revs on flat land in 6th gear but the cruise is basically unusable because it is shifting all the time, like every minute at least. Slight hill over an overpass, better kick down to 5th for 5 seconds. Long steep hill, better let the speed drop with it laboring in 5th, then kick down to 4th, upshift, then kick down again.

Get the manual! I have a 6MT sport and swapped in the black OR flares and bumper trim. Easy enough to do to get you that manual OR in Canada.

I’ve driven my friends re geared 5.29 auto 3rd Gen and I despised it and praised my manual truck.

my suggestion is watch the Nitro gears video on YouTube explaining why the 3rd Gen needs re gearing and you’ll learn that the stock 6MT is the answer.

Always have the ECT on in my '20 and after a few thousand miles it was fine. Whenever I forget to hit the button, I know as soon as I start accelerating which reminds me to turn it on.

The six speed auto in my 2021 is more than acceptable. The one in my 2017 was not.

Same. S5 FTW (for the win).

I will be tuning first week of march too.

Then, hopefully this year when Nitro comes through... 5.29's and then I basically don't even own 6th gear lol.

I like it a lot on my '18 TRD Sport!. I was originally thinking about getting a manual since my '96 Tacoma is a manual.
    Works out nice having both.

if you get a scan gauge and set 1 of the 4 data information to gear, you'll find that the gear selection on the center screen of your dash if not always what the transmission is in. It will show what you want, but the computer will still select the gear it wants.
Living in the mountains, I think the transmission hunts too much, between 5th-6th gear you really dont feel it, 4th a little and 3rd a lot. One of the major things I hate is pulling a hill and the transmission drops to 3rd gear, then goes to 4th and the back to 3rd over and over, so that when I use the "S" to try and hold a gear.
With the auto, a tune can make a major difference in how the truck drives.
