Yep, owner responsible for smog prior to sale. At least it was last time I dealt with a sale (the POS Audi a couple of years back).

I think he just royally screwed up.

He says, "yeah I show we have one in stock, it is part #...."

Me: Dude. That's a Federal CAT. Its not legal here in our state.

600 bones cheaper but hell no. Not going to risk being rejected by the smog tech. :pout:

    Piercey Toyota... South Bay.

I've wondered about this actually. I know non-CARB cats will fail the tailpipe test, but only 1999 and older vehicles get tailpipe tested. So what's to stop someone from installing non-CARB cats in a 2000+ vehicle? When I look at my Magnaflows I don't see any inscription on them to make them fail visual but I guess there probably is one somewhere that they could use to determine if they're CARB compliant or not.

though I do see cars for sale all the time on FB marketplace and such that say "CEL light on, easy fix" which makes me wonder how people are doing the proper transfer and paperwork without a viable smog cert. Must be some way you can get the buyer to assume responsibility I guess.

So the way it works (at least to my knowledge) is the aftermarket CAT not only has to be CARB certified but it has to be a match for the engine "Test Group".

When I replaced the exhaust manifold cat in the wife's lancer, magnaflow offer a CARB compliant and matching test group.
With this PZEV (Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle) camry, no dice. OE or nothing. Magnaflow does offer a downstream CAT for it but not the exhaust manifold cat.

When I smogged the lancer after installing the magnaflow, the cert wasn't good enough. The tech put the car up on the lift and visually confirmed the aftermaket cat was the same as in the magnaflow doc I provided.

I don't think they are. too risky, what if it fails smog regardless of what the new buyer puts into it. I actually like the 'law'. Want me to buy your car, have that emissions report in hand showing it passed.

Huh, I never had to show a cert for the Magnaflow cats on my truck when I got them replaced then smogged...guy never even asked about it. Guess he didn't look lol.

I don't even remember being given any documents after the exhaust shop installed them but it was 6 years ago now. Hopefully I don't ever get asked about it

Does that rule apply to out-of-state sales as well? Like if I want to buy your car and title it in South Dakota (I'm assuming South Dakota doesn't have strict emissions rules)?

Chalk it up to a lazy tech and/or luck. He was probably to busy admiring our tacoma

Tech I had is doing the visual inspection and says "Did you replace the CAT?" What can I do, lie? Its just this shiny new exhaust manifold reflecting his half a billion lumen inspection light. I said yep and hand over the little doc card Magnaflow provided, I think it was the warranty card now that I think about it. It had the serial number of the cat on it. Tech says, "I have to check it. We can't risk our license."

Doubt it. You're taking it out of state. All depends on your state laws.

He spent a lot of time the first time I went there going over it visually which is why I wonder if maybe there's a part number on the cats somewhere he was able to look up. He definitely went over the supercharger/headers CARB stickers, cause he told me the headers are only good for up to 03 Tacomas (apparently TRD never bothered to get them certified for 04s which is bullshit). But he let that slide. Which is a big reason I always go to him

The toyota parts counter kid suggested I check the salvage yard. Hell, I'm not even sure you can purchase a used cat legally anymore. All those damned CAT thefts.

Huh I didn't know that, well I guess its not like they're VIN matched so they wouldn't know if you did. Unless you get busted as the seller
