Regarding smog in CA and catalytic converters.

The inside of non-CA differ from CA variants in that they're more free flowing, and use less of those precious metals found inside.

Can't give any specifics as to how far down it filters, but there's significant difference.

I doubt a tailpipe test can tell the difference for a well-kept vehicle as CA smog testing has a pretty large threshold as far as how much per million is allowable.

The only time you'd really get caught with a non-CA catalytic converter is if your vehicle is asking to get looked at IE ricer honda, etc. That or if your vehicle was subject to inspection at a STAR station.

I've had 3 different vehicles with non-CA cats and only 1 was caught; it was initially labeled as a gross polluter and I used it as a track car in Laguna Seca. It was only because I thought it'd be more convenient to drive to the track versus trailering it that I thought I'd try to get it registered. California CATs get stamped on both sides versus others get stamped on one side.

With that said, I'm not saying go out and get a non-compliant catalytic converter for CA use, just saying you'd be surprised how many people get away with it.

that's what I was really curious about cause it seems that, unless they are really eyeballing your converter or it fails the tailpipe test, how are they going to know whether it's OEM, CARB aftermarket or non CARB aftermarket

One of my Corvettes and Trans Ams had Magnaflow CATS.

It was nice and easy to unbolt my long tube headers and put in a stock set with high-flow CATs and stock exhaust.

I'll tell you one thing, I don't care how good you are but doing spark plugs on an LT1/4 with stock manifolds is a pain in the ass.

Regarding CARB compliant and all, my Miata (track car) was my other car with a high-flow CAT. Gross polluter and all.

However, I still had the CARB compliant sticker for the Jackson Racing supercharger it had  so at least it was "half" legit.

Jesus I've screened 4 phone calls in 10 minutes from #s I don't know...each time they hang up then a minute or two later it's a new number calling from another area code/state. Fuckers are persistent

You know, the ONLY ones that get through the entire Google phone screen speech and leave a message on my voicemail are the fucking extended warranty ones. It's like they figure they're still going to annoy me with it by leaving a message I have to delete.

All other ones drop the call halfway through the call screening

The exception to that is when the tech's test unit shows the mutiple recent code clears. Which I know is possible because the tech at mitsubishi asked me about it when I was clearing the damn thing for their lame Fan Unit recall. Didn't know about the recall but was clearing it in order to smog it. This was years ago though and again, it was the dealer service department (they were performing the fan unit recall).

As for tail pipe emission sniffer, haven't had one of those done in YEARS. 2000 model year and newer vehicles (except for vehicles 14,000 GVWR or greater) no longer require the tailpipe portion of the smog inspection. Its all computer.

Doubt the tech has the right to overrule. It's up to the state.

Clearing codes, and the PCM storing "history" would be specific to some manufacturers only.

I flashed and reflashed my SRT4 powered toy so many times, and FCA's PCM didn't store any history of those flashes. Same went for clearing codes and this was an '05 PCM too.

However, I know my '12 Focus ST timestamped each and every reflash or code cleared for up to a year or two? I had a lot of mods on that one so you know I messed with the PCM plenty.

Good thing they did away with the sniffer for +2000. I completely forgot about that.

Speaking of CV axles, I still need to figure out what to do with these (and no, you can't have them lol). Marketplace or CL?

LT is now just a cats with hard hats thread confirmed.

Edit: I wear a hard hat when I climb 32ft ladders to install APs in warehouse rafters.
