Footwell Lights That Don’t Suck

Put them on the bottom of the rear headrests?

 

I'm not enthused about that wiring situation. There's a nice little lip on the bulkhead liner that they'd sit perfectly against, but it's hiding the wiring that's the obstacle. This is the first vehicle that I've paid a lot of attention to the form as well as the function, and as a result it has been my absolute favorite.

Here's my new strategy for wiring the rears. I just hate having exposed wires which keeps me from putting the lights in the back of the front seats, although this is the easiest wiring approach.

I grabbed some wire and pulled the rear sill plate. There is an open space that runs over to the rear storage box. I think I am going to remove the rear storage boxes and run my wires from the passenger side sill plate and along the front wall of the frame that the storage boxes sit on securing it with 3M tape to the metal frame. I'll pop the wire up in the middle of the right rear seat and attach the light with velcro on the carpeted wall or to the bottom of the seat itself, then back in front on the storage boxes over to the left side and do the same. With the storage boxes back in, the wires will be concealed except for where they come out under the edge of the storage box to the lights.

I am waiting on 2 four ft extension wires from VLEDS before I do it so I know I will have plenty of wire. Now I'm excited but the package from VLEDS disappeared after it was accepted yesterday afternoon by the USPS so who knows when it will arrive.

Thanks to @TheCochese for the idea to use the storage box area. Once I confirmed I could get from the door sill to that, it all made sense.

 

That's basically how I installed my rear set. The only wire/connections you see if if you lift up the lower part of the back seat. Storage compartment came out very easy. Didn't even take the stuff out that was in it..

 

If I decide to return to stock, I’ll come back and dm you guys.

 

Did you need extra wires?

 

I purchased a 4 foot extension wire before I started but ended up with one wire that was an extension when I was done. At a cost of less than 10 bucks I figured better to have extra then be short.

 

Anyone else sell extensions, preferably in a manner that would get to me quickly without a ton of shipping costs? Amazon?

VLEDS has taken down all but the 8ft extensions on their site. I was thinking two 4ft extensions would be perfect.

What length are you looking for? I have 2 4ft ones (somewhere) in route and thinking I'm going to just need one, at most. I'm happy to pass on the extra 4ft to you if that is what you need.

I think one four foot extension would be fine, as I want to get that first connection at the rear seat to be a bit nicer. However, I also don't need 8 feet of extension tucked up under the storage cubby. Exchanging that out for a four foot one should work, but I need to measure first. I want to tuck all the connectors into the seat hinge and secure them there. Maybe that will be my afternoon project, take some string and measure.

 

These are super cool. I think I'm going to wait and see if a red/white option comes out in the future though.

They have those colors already. Multiple white color hues as well.

edit: or did you mean dual color like the meso map lights?

 

Dual color like the map lights, yes. I'd prefer to have white when the doors open and dimmed red when closed.

 

any love for Gx460? Or 5th Gen T4R kit will work?

 

OK, ordered two 4' extensions. With luck they'll be here shortly after the rear aquas.

 

The GX is a close relative to the LC and not so much the T4R. Doesn’t it have footwell lights from the factory? I’m not sure how they function, but I assume they just illuminate when the door is open and not when the headlights are on?

 

It does have the factory footweell light and only on when the door is open. We cant change out the bulb. I hate the amber color and i barely can see anything with the light output.
