My 17 has 33k miles on her and the engine looks like new. No signs of any leaks, nothing.

    Vehicle:
    2017 Tacoma OR 4x4 (formerly a 1998 SR5 PU, 2002 OR 4x4, 1995 4x4 4Runner, 1985 4x4 Toy PU) ... and RIP’s (rust in pieces) to a Bronco II 4x4 & S10 Blazer 4x4
Basically, the 2017 is the same as a 2019 without the Toyota Nanny and all that extra TSS stuff. Nothing else that significant has been changed between them. There are many more happy owners of those model years than not, just decide if you want the extra fluff or not, then ask the usual questions and look at the usual parts and records as you would when buying any other used vehicle. They are all good years.

Considering that there are more high mileage 2017's than any other year(at least on this forum), I would not be concerned. Several are already over 300k and one was for sale last year with 273k miles and I am sure that one is likely over 300k by now. There are several threads on this.

122k here and I’ll I’ve done are fluid changes and tires.

only time the truck has been to the dealer is for the 2 Toyota care service.. which I wish I wouldn’t have wasted my time on.

    Check build thread!
    1. Timing covers: I’d say about 10% of GR motors end up having this leak, that includes the 4.0 too. Once it’s resealed and fixed properly like yours was, it won’t leak for another 200k or so miles.
    2. That leak seems to have been fixed on newer models, but even on the older models it was pretty rare. I wouldn’t worry about it.
    3. The tune we speak of (KDmax/OVtune) is a purely drivability tune. It is mainly to fix the slightly clunky and laggy nature the autos have. I’m sure you noticed when test driving that it was a bit slow to shift and the like- this tune just makes that a bit better. It doesn’t put any extra strain on the motor, doesn’t turn it into a jumpy race car (like your 435 lol) and just makes it more pleasant to drive. It still takes 87 on that tune too.

Please consider that what you see on TW are folks who are experiencing rare issues.
What you DON'T see on TW are the thousands of happy Taco owners who are enjoying their trucks and are not wasting their time hanging out here praising their Tacos.
In general, people who bitch are frequent posters - those who are satisfied seldom post.
Hold on to your wallet if you hang out on TW too much.

So you own a modified BMW and are concerned about Toyota's reliability? :rofl:Ever owned a Bimmer out of warranty? :spending:

Buy an extended warranty or a certified pre owned if you're worried about it.

Not worried about warranty. My modded BMW has 99k on it. So yes it is out of warranty. The only repair that I have made is a valvecover gasket. As I have said repeatedy in this thread. I’m only concerned about buying a bad year of a great truck. Buying the 2017 tonight.

My 2017 overall has been really good. Currently has 11,4xx miles on it. Third brake light leak tsb fix, hvac blower motor stripped out and was replaced under warranty, oem battery leaked and was replaced under warranty with Toyota Truestart 84 month warranty battery. That's it.

This guy works for Toyota (I believe) and does a great narrative on describing the Tacoma.

The rear light is a recall and never expires like a warranty. It was fixed on my 2018 for free.
