An utterly basic automatic x-mission quest.

I’ve owned 2 Tacomas in 2 years and both had the same X-mission behavior.
During gentle acceleration (e.g. crossing a parking lot or driveway) the engine will tac-up, but with little corresponding movement of the truck. Then suddenly it’s as if the clutch pops and you move-out.
What is this and is it characteristic of pickups in general or just Toyotas? And, why is it different (not as responsive) than what you have in passenger cars?

 

I've never heard or seen this. Mine is going before you get on the gas, and it will only rev up if you do some serious lead footin, otherwise I rarely see it above 1200 rpm.


let me get this clear, you indicating it kinda feels like if you were to dump the clutch in a manual? Sounds like your tranny fluid is low or something, torque converter isn't locking up when it should.

 

Yeah the transmission stays in first for too long before switching to second. The pop is when it shifts to second at around 10-15 km/h. Mine does it also. Seems like bad tranny shift points at low loads by Toyota

 

Didn't the trans tsb fix that?

 

Mine seemed to definitely do this worse prior to the reflash a month ago.

 

TSB took care of it for me.

 

i have a 2011 so no, but I guess that before it shifted from first to second way higher. Though, It's really not that bad, just an annoyance that first to second should be 3-5 km/h lower under light loads.

 

Supralight got it exactly right. Is this something the dealership can handle?
Another poster mentioned "TSB" fixed it. What's that?

 

Did they apply that TSB at the factory? I have a 2009 and the TSB applies not sure on the 2011 though. I will have to check the TSB.

 

"T"echnical "S"ervice "B"ulletin - basically it is a fix that toyota came up with for a host of issue on the truck right from the factory. One was adding a 4-leaf spring pack to the rear for people who complained about a rough ride with weight in the back. Another fixes the shift problem from 1-2 etc etc. Google up or search here for Toyota Tacoma TSB.

ok, I think I get what you guys are saying. The only time I see something like that is if I step on the gas to get moving fairly quickly, then let off it before it shifts. I see that more in 3rd gear on the highway though.

 

I notice what you're talking about but it's only when you JUST shift into drive. It's like the transmission has yet to fully engage and then it firms up in an instant.

Not really a problem and more of a quirk.
