The premium package for my Canadian 2020 Offroad included leather, sunroof, wireless charging, Multi Terrain Monitor, amongst other things. At the time, I was told that in the US the Offroad Premium package also included JBL audio and the new-for-2020 LED headlights - but not in Canada because Toyota. It was disheartening to find out that I wasn't getting the LED headlights until after I already had my allocation, but I figured I could just order and install myself once others had done the conversion. Then I found out that they were like $600+ USD a piece and said forget it. Maybe one day if they ever come down in price, or you know, standard when I get a 4th gen hybrid...

My 2020 TRD sport auto is great. I’ve heard of people complaining about the shift points but that hasn’t been my experience.

I will mention…. I test drove one probably in 17 or 18. I hated the way that one shifted. Maybe some improvement has been made since?

Auto is completely fine. I drive up and down a few thousand feet on a coastal highway every day for work ~40 miles. My work truck is a 2021 F250 with a V8 and a 6-speed auto. It shifts just as often as my Taco at the same spots on the same hills. The Taco just has this annoying drone at ~2500 RPM which is where it tends to hold after shifting down twice up hills. The drone makes shifting super noticeable and sounds like it's "working hard" when it's actually not.

It behaves exactly as I would expect. It doesn't shift up or down randomly or any of the earlier years reported. If you find it hesitates, put your foot down farther and rev it out. It scoots right along at 3800+ RPM. I have zero complaints on or offroad with the auto so far. 100% stock truck for reference.

For those that don't want a tune or find their transmission is almost ok, ShiftSense cures the ills. It isn't a tune and can be removed at any time. All it does is makes the transmission shift more predictably. No more upshifting when it shouldn't or wild downshifting because it isn't responding to your throttle inputs. I forget it is in there most of the time other than I don't bitch about the shifting.

    Check build thread!
It does exactly what I need it to just fine. It’s a truck. My commute is 250 miles each way, and I have bad knees from hockey, so manual is kinda rough. It tows great and with a tune it’s quick.

I tried that. It shifted to 6 anyway while running 75 on the interstate. Totally ignored the fact it was in S5.

I picked up my 2022 Sport this week and I think the automatic transmission is decent. I live in a hilly area and I’ve had no problems.

After years of driving higher performance cars (and enjoying the speeding tickets that go hand in hand with them) I'm more than pleased to slow the f*ck down in my automatic Tacoma. Seriously, I pretty much drive like a grandpa now so the Tacoma auto is just fine by me.

Bonus: the money I've saved in speeding tickets has gone a long way to modding the truck.

The factory tune works fine for me. As others have said, it is a truck. I have had sports cars in the past and I am comfortable with the Taco the way it is.

I hear you, but still have one very fast car in the driveway. But yes, no need to go crazy fast in the Taco. Wife drives it faster than I do.
I just hit the ETC button as soon as the truck is warmed up and the shifts are just fine.

If one wants to experience a very poor shifting "automatics" find an old Porsche 996 or a BMW from around 1999 and prior when they had the Tiptronic. They shifted so slow when using the paddle shifters it was painful.

Either your S mode is broken or you are mistaken. Locking out the upper gears is the only thing S mode does. 5th gear is not a huge difference from 6th in these automatics as far as ratios and rpms - they are both overdrive gears. I'll bet you just thought it was 6th that it was going into but really it was 5th. Try watching the rpms next time as you manually shift thru the gears and make sure ECT is off, because with ECT on it will not always do the upshifts when you are in S mode unless your speed is high enough.

Nope not for me. Everyone's priorities are different but second choice was MGM which I already have and I'm ready for something new. TRD Pro was a no-go because it is too juvenile looking for my line of work and it would take forever to get one at my small town dealer. If ever.

    Snicker all you want.

my 2017 OR auto is great with ECT button on. It does everything great. Doesn't hunt for gears, lots of power, everything I like. Without ECT it feels like it lost 2 cylinders.
