they look very well built, looks like 1/4 aluminum? I think I seen them online for around 500-700. how far down does it articulate or swing out? Also, what did you do to lock the bikes down, like if you needed to go in use a restroom, or go grab a 12 pack on the way home from riding?

Im not at home so I can't measure for certain but most looks to be 3/16 or 1/4" depending on the part.

It doesn't swing out... But it articulates down enough to open the tailgate with a bike on it.

1Up has various ways to lock. Nothing on a hitch rack is never secure. I've solved most of that by living in rural Canada and not worrying about it. But if I do need to lock the bikes up I usually use a cable lock around the frames and the rack. The rack is held into the hitch with a tamper-resistant bolt and a locking pin. Secure enough for most places I end up.

makes sense dude thanks for your input. I will look into them. I don't plan on being in crappy areas but, when camping, I would def lock the bikes up , maybe I am being paranoid? especially if we are traveling to other national parks and such. always good to protect your investment right? I really do like this one https://rockymounts.com/backstage/

Never hurts to be paranoid. I'm probably a little too laissez faire when it comes to locking up. There are definitely ways to keep bikes secure depending on your needs

That Backstage has some good features for the price but... There's a lot of plastic. The handle especially and it's pretty exposed. It also (if I remember correctly) will have a worse departure angle than a 1Up. Not usually a huge issue but I wouldn't want to drag it on anything. I wouldn't worry as much if I bounced my 1Up off something. It will survive.

The other issue I've seen some customers with is that the Backstage won't go down enough to open the tailgate. These have been on trucks other than the Tacoma though. I can't speak to a Backstage/Tacoma setup or if a different truck and a 1Up would have the same issue.

The Backstage is fine for long-weekend use but I wouldn't want it as a full time rack. I use my 1Up three days a week at least and lives on my truck full time from spring to winter.

Our 1Up is over five years old and has been across the country, all over the West and hundreds of miles of dirt roads. Still works like new … actually better as it’s gotten broken in. Two bike, heavy duty. When folks with swingout racks see it tilt down easily with two bikes on it, and clear the lowered tailgate, they are surprised.

man, I love snow riding...honestly, more than regular riding. I wish we were getting some more here...but it has been mostly mud - which sux cause it closes the trails down

I have had my double bike heavy duty (with 2 single bike add ons) for almost 9 years. It is on 24/7, through all seasons. It is a tank!! I love it. Also would highly recommend. One of the best mods purchased for both the truck and bikes!!

    Yup

I’ve done the both of their routes Durango and Telluride. Going back and doing the Durango route again later this year. Can’t recommend the San Juan Huts system/people enough.

After being group leader for H2H and organizing lots of group road trips for rides and races my biggest piece of advice is get people to pay up ASAP. Skin in the game generates commitment and gets the fence riders in or out of the equation making it easier for the others.

As far as H2H specific advice, 8 go for the price of 6 if you can fill the hit with your group. So book for 8, get 6 definite and plan for 8. If you only end up with 6 then you get free space/bunks/place to spread out in the hut. Your group can have fewer people than what’s on your roster but not more.

So, next week we are headed to Florida for a family vacation. My Wife is cool and knows I turn into a nut job when I don’t/can’t ride. We are staying in Indian shores. I’ve heard Alfia is actually really fun, it’s about a hour I think. Is there other things I should check out?
