It’s supposed to be, the cap aligns with the lines on the tailgate:

Looks like this is going to have to be my move. Local buyer sold it before I had a chance to get up there.

They are pretty popular. Good reason to build a Stateside factory.

I've only ever seen one other SmartCap in the wild, but get questions on mine all the time, mainly "is it worth the price?" My usual response is something like "hell yeah, except these dollar store latches."

That’s tough for a matte finish. Likely any traditional/standard method will make it noticeably worse. You rub the same spot enough and you’ll make it shiny. When I was reading up on matte paint care the only true option is a repaint. If I had to do that then I’d think hard about Bedliner sprayed on

I didn’t use that as my guide (never seen it mentioned)- the gap between bed box and cab is what I followed up to canopy and cab for the cleanest line.

I’m assuming this will be less of an issue with the 2nd Gen since the tailgate does not have a rounded upper edge. Now that the 2nd Gen is out and being installed, can anyone with a 2G Evo please post pics of that aspect?

I bought the shell from a shop locally that was offering free install, when I picked it up I noticed a weird gap from the bed to the cab, the hatch was about centered on the tailgate. I felt around on the inside and noticed a lip against the back of the bed (toward the cab) and there was a gap on that lip. I loosened the C clamps and slid the cap back flush to the lip against the back of the bed….. that’s when I noticed that the hatch then lined up perfect w/ that curved line on the tailgate so I figured it was supposed to be that way. It also allows the tailgate to close a little easier w/ the way the seal now presses up against it. I can open/close the tailgate easier without opening the back hatch. I also like how there is much less gap from cab to cap.

Probably very likely since the 3rd gen has that rear camera hump (at least I assumed that’s why it has that weird upper edge).

Anyone finding a need or benefit to adding bed strengtheners once you install your Smartcap. I am getting do it/no need to add from a dealer expending which employee I speak to.

You’re adding weight to the bedsides, but very little. You may also add a rack for a RTT, carry kayaks, maybe an awning and additional fuel/water in RotoPax. The dynamic weight limit is what your bedsides can tolerate. Stiffeners are added insurance so your bed walls don’t end up askew.

I added some before the cap to avoid any problems down the line and give peace of mind.

This week I noticed the tailgate had a very bad/uneven gap on each side. Not sure if this was misaligned before stiffeners to be honest, but I'd imagine so since the stiffeners are pretty solid.

Bed stiffeners are recommended for anyone adding a topper to their Tacoma. When I installed mine before the topper, it squared up my bed sides that I didn’t realize were slightly off. The added tie down point have been nice too. If your dropping topper money, it’s well worth the small investment.

I absolutely would, whether you’re going to put a tent on top of your cap or not.
