I recently got a key made and programmed for $85 at a local Ace Hardware. Generic black key but works fine.

I also got one from a local Ace hardware but mine has a damn battery in it and the truck will not start without this battery.
I carry the original as a spare but I wish I would have known. Honda has been putting batteries in keys for awhile now, what a stupid idea..

There isn’t a battery in the key.
There is a chip in the key, the truck (ignition key amplifier) energizes the chip in the key.
The chip ID has to match the ID in the immobilizer ECU.

In short, you need a scan tool to add keys.
Or see a locksmith like @JaCado said, some of them will do it pretty cheap:thumbsup:

Some aftermarket keys as we've discovered here have batteries in them for the security chip, OE keys don't except the ones with integrated fobs.

I forgot about those, I will have to pass on those.
I like simplicity, I have enough batteries to worry about now.

For a 2006 taco the key is just a regular ordinary key. No batteries, chips, nothing. Any place that makes keys can make you duplicates. As far as the fob, go to a locksmith and they will program one for you. Not sure what they cost. About 2 years ago I got a new fob for my truck and I paid around $100, don’t remember exactly. The reason I know this is in my 2009 I went to a hardware store and had them duplicate a key and they used a regular metal key blank. Works fine, starts the truck and opens the door.

All V6 (and some 4cyl) 2nd gens have an immobilizer and a key with a chip in it, the key itself doesn't have a battery but it does have a chip in it that is powered up and read by the transponder coil around the ignition lock cylinder when the key is inserted. If a blank or un-programmed key is inserted the truck will crank but not start.
Some aftermarket chipped keys have a battery in them that powers the chip instead of being powered by the transponder coil, if the battery dies in it then to the truck it's the same as a non-chipped key and thus won't start the truck.

The fob with a battery that locks/unlocks the doors is totally separate and independent from the immobilizer chip in the key.

Not arguing with you but I had a plane metal key made for mine as a spare that I keep hidden on the truck. Before I hid it i tested it several times. Started the truck no problem. That is on a 2009 so I assume trucks prior to mine are the same as far as the key.

No remote start. I had the key made a couple years ago to have a spare for when I’m out in the boonies in case I lost it. I remember testing it and starting the truck a couple times. Just for the hell of it tomorrow morning I’ll climb under the truck and retrieve the key and make sure it works as I said. I had to cut the top part of the key off for it to fair in the magnetic hide a key box. If it works or doesn’t work I’ll let you know and I’ll post a pic of the key

Very interesting, not sure how that works then unless someone has a chip from a key taped somewhere or a bypass installed for a remote start.
