Back down to earth again... Up, Down, Turn around, back to the beginning...

Just requested a quote on a X330 and called local Cub dealer about an XT2. Cub dealer has 1 XT1 GT54 and has been waiting 6 months for anything else to come in. Nothing new there, that supply delay is in every industry...

I'm still going to get a new trailer. The one I have is an unknown homemade from the ground up. The deck is hefty, solid steel with nice sides, gate, etc, but the axle and tongue are all flimsy and homemade. I bet the trailer itself takes up 50% of any sort of theoretical weight rating. I tried about 900lbs between mower and dirt bike and it was overloaded. The largest issue with it is that I cant even put sheet goods on it because the deck itself, between front rail and lift gate, is 95". Just 1" too short.

It isn't as exciting, but anything is an upgrade from a clapped out Scotts S1742. That poor thing was never meant to last 23 yrs.

alright... I'm trying to get this X500 running so I can sell it.
When I turn the key to "start", it looks like the starter gear is struggling to push up far enough to engage the flywheel and isn't holding itself up strong enough to get a good consistent spin going. There are no missing gear teeth.
If I jumper a wire across the 2 posts on the starter solenoid while the key is "on", the starter spins up to speed but doesn't lift the gear up. Turn the key to "start" while the posts are jumpered and it fires up like a new machine.

I tried a new solenoid but it made no difference.
    Any ideas?

Wires look ok as best I can tell but I haven't removed the mower deck to look up from underneath.

Have you tried a fully charged battery? Sometimes there isn't quite enough voltage to make that pinion gear spin out and contact the fly wheel.

If it was battery, why would jumper wire work?
I used a lithium jump pack anyway and made no difference.

    I guess I'm not sure?

Is there a safety that may not be fully closed?

I had an older JD that gave me troubles starting, happened to mention it to an acquaintance who turned out to be familiar with JD. He might have mentioned a TSB, been many years.

Solution was to put a Bosch style relay on the trigger wire to the solenoid so the key switch only closes the new relay. Run a new wire from the battery positive, through the new relay and on to the solenoid trigger terminal.

As he explained it there wouldn't be enough voltage left to actuate the solenoid reliably after going through all the safety switches, there is enough however to actuate the added relay which provides the solenoid trigger with full voltage via the new wire.

All the safety circuits function normally as the only change is what the key switch actuates, not where it gets its power from. $10 and 20 minutes and I never had a problem again.

I got the 3240 out to lift some cherry and cut it with my new/used Stihl MS291. Loving this saw and cutting at waist height was nice vs on the ground.

Wish I could figure out a way to hold the logs away from the forks for cutting. I like that height. Maybe scoop the end of the log with the bucket?

    Interesting.
Seems odd to just start doing this after 10 years though.

I'll pull more covers and if I can't visibly find a bad wire, I might give your method a try. Got a box of wires and relays in garage already anyway.

If going that route (bypass safeties), Why not just install a push button from the battery to the soliniod exciter post?

Safeties will still work while its running and the only safety that will not be used is the seat switch.

The method I mentioned doesn't bypass any safeties as the added relay is at the end of the safety chain.

The only change is that the start signal from the key switch now actuates the relay and using the normally open contact set provides a full battery voltage line to the original solenoid excite terminal when it (the relay) closes.

The new relay is only providing power to the original solenoid excite terminal.

Any safety switch (seat, gear, pto, etc) still has to be closed before the start signal from the key switch causes the new relay to actuate.

The only potential for failure that I can see is the relay failing in the closed position, with a decent quality sealed relay I don't see that happening too often.

I’ve done this same thing on my Kubota for the same reasons

relays only use approx 2a to power the pull in coil, while starter solenoid coils requires 5-8a for a good solid pull and hit, or it won’t seat the contacts well enough inside. You get a connection but not enough to make starter motor work “click”.

circuit break down, internal resistance of all the switches age, time, swartz all plays in.

Relay 2a pull in power is from key switch, closes relay power direct from battery lug on stater thru relay to excite stud on solenoid, bam, and away she goes.

Kubota and JohnDeere both want $150 for the “kit” which can be done with about $8 in parts if you know what your looking at. Everything happens right at the starter, nothing extravagant, no fishing wires or dash dissection.

I’ve used stuff I have laying around, nothing sealed, just have to replace the relay every couple years. I have dozens so…. ( I parted out a power distribution board from an ambulance a few years ago, 18 relays and a dozen circuit breakers of varying amperage )

And people laugh at us for saving all that kind of stuff. I have done countless no dollar fixes out of my "I might need this" pile.
