Best wishes to all those who are sick / ill at the moment, and condolences to those who have lost friends and family members.

My mom never spent any time outside without long sleeves and/or sunscreen. At age 61, she was found to have advanced Melanoma. She went through chemo for a year or so, ended up cancer free for the next 2 years. Then it came back. And spread to other areas. She continued with chemo and fought it for another 2 years. She and my dad lived down in Southern California (Barstow area) at the time, and I am 450 miles north, so I didn't get to see them very often. By very good luck, I was on vacation in the various National Parks in Utah for a couple weeks, and decided that I would take the long way back to my home, and stop in to see my folks for a day or two. I called and talked to my mom to let her know. Turns out, my sister was also coming out to see them for the weekend (she was in the Los Angeles area). Just before I got to their house, my sister called me to say mom had been taken to the local hospital a few minutes ago, and to meet them all there, which I did. Once my mom knew that all of us were going to be there, she decided to hold on for one more day, and she passed that night. I will always be thankful that I just happened to be there her last night. She was only 66. And we have zero history of cancer anywhere else in our family.

My dad lived until just days shy of his 85th birthday. He died of long term congestive heart failure. He never had a heart attack, stroke, etc., and never spent any time in a hospital, even though he outlived both of his parents, who both dies from heart attacks in their late 60's or early 70's. True to his word, he was still going hunting until less than a year before he died.
