Took it to a dealer for an inspection. They found this and quoted something like $3k for a new rack and pinion. Any chance there's a seal that's replaceable in there and a new boot to slap on? I can replace the rack myself but I'd rather not if it's serviceable. Or maybe lucas stop leak? Its a very slow leak, 2006 dcsb.20220301_111129.jpg 20220301_111134.jpg

Damn, that doesn't look good. Have you been doing some crazy off-roading or just normal driving? I'm asking cause it's helpful to know the cause of problems like this so others can try to prevent or delay said problems from happening.

I have no idea about fixing it other than taking it to another mechanic shop instead of a stealership.

It's leaking because the whole unit is worn. A new seal wouldn't fix it. There aren't rebuild kits.

Your truck looks like it needs some love.

A rack is 500$ plug 5 hours labour, so maybe 1200$ plus alignment. Not sure how it got so crazy expensive, maybe find a small shop.

FYI, just bought this thing in Ohio where it's been for 16 years. Now it lives in Kentucky and I plan to restore everything. I've got a fat spreadsheet of repairs and maintenance I'm working through. Basically I want it back to its oem glory plus a leveling kit.

    If it’s a project truck and not a DD….

I was curious so I emailed CVJ, here’s their response:

We do not currently stock that rack & pinion unit. We can remanufacture your original equipment Toyota rack if you send it to us. Please include your name, phone number and vehicle information if you ship to us. It takes us five days to seven business days. The rack you send in needs to be in a rebuildable condition.

Your cost is $625.00, plus freight (FedEx ground) which is about $50-$70 (one way) in the continental US. Shipping varies depending on the zip code.

We can only remanufacture original equipment manufacturer (OEM) rack & pinion units since aftermarket (new racks from part stores) cannot be rebuilt and are poor to begin with.
We completely remanufacture your rack & pinion using OEM parts where it counts, and only top quality aftermarket parts for the rest. We use high quality aftermarket neoprene for our bellows boots.

Inner tie rod ends are included, outer tie rod ends are not included. Mounts and solenoids (where applicable) are inspected, but are not included.

Our rack & pinion units have a three year limited warranty. When used for off road or in performance/modified applications, there is no warranty.

We accept Visa and MasterCard. This quote is valid for 30 days.

Thanks for your inquiry, I hope we can be of service to you.

If the cheap Chinese remanufactured go for $500, this would be a no brainer for me.
