Stop being a B, get a 4x4. People talk about extra cost and maintenance, who care cheap asses. Its a toyota its quality will be a family heirloom.

Agree completely. The FWD handles ice covered hills without on issue (with quality tires), however more than a few time my 4x4 trucks refuse to get going at the same spot in RWD and I have to put it in 4Hi. The FWD also never tries to slide the back end around when driving up icy mountains at highway speeds, the RWD does.

Good catch, because I left that out.

The Tacoma uses the brakes to simulate a LSD. So, short of the OR/Pro E-locker, nothing in the differential is changed.

It does work well in my FWD rav4. Better than the normal traction control system, which cuts way to much power out in slippery conditions. The auto lsd is pretty good. I disable traction control in my rav4 and it enables auto lsd.

But it is not a real mechanical lsd.

Unless it is a city-based work truck, I don’t understand why you wouldn’t get 4x4

I live in the snow belt and use my 4x2 truck for hunting, fishing, going to cottage, towing stuff, home construction and repair material pickup, lugging ATV and motorcycle around, firewood, pretty much everything. Never owned a 4x4 truck, never saw the need for one. Have had multiple 4x4 work trucks over the years from different manufacturers and the majority of trouble with them was with front drive train components but then again these trucks were used by multiple drivers under adverse conditions so maintenance and repair costs tend to be much higher than one used for running back and forth to the mall.

If you get a 4x4 you will find reasons to need a 4x4.

^ This. Just like any tool in the tool box...Need a circular saw. Need a jigsaw too! End up finding a use for them. 4x4 with versatility in mind, you'll end up trying to find ways to utilize it.

I have a 21 Sport. Do I need the 4x4? No. I live in the metro Atlanta area and maybe see snow or ice once a year. However, I found myself in January making a quick trip to Virginia when a snow event hit with a foot and a half of snow fell the day before I was coming back. I was able to make it back with no issues.

That said, I know tires (I have Duratracs) and skill come into play big time. However, having the security blanket of the 4x4 made me feel better. I left going the long route through Lynchburg instead of being stuck on I95 with no problems. I know I most likely won't need the lockers the off road has. Will I ever need the 4x4 again? I don't know... I had a 2x4 Tundra for 10 years before this Tacoma and never had a problem. However, gas mileage isn't bad (maybe 19 mpg average mixed driving) and so far it runs like a champ.

Get it if you like it. I don't regret mine. It's nice to have in a pinch even if 99.9% of the time you'll never use it like me...

2wd majority of drive, but one day up in the mountain parking lot with dirt, ice and snow, 2wd didn't work at all. The truck moved forward right away when switched to 4wd.

I live in PA with lots of hills/mountains. Lots of snow from time to time and one day 2WD didn’t do shit for me going up a smaller hill. Stuck it in 4x4 and she didn’t even flinch going up. Get it and be happy.
