The 4.88 mega thread!!

What is your KDMAX Pro configuration? I am looking to do the same with my 2020 TRD Off Road with 4:88 gearing, and with the KDMAX Pro upgrade. Thanks in advance.

 

I went with “sport” throttle and am happy with it. I am mostly street and sport throttle seems to fit my driving style. They do tune your truck configured for 4.88’s. I’m still very happy with this tune!

 

What octane setting did you use? Thanks

 

They did away with octane specific tunes as I understand.
KDmax pro is “octane learning”….it’ll adjust to which octane you use.

 

Well, I just got notified from Nitro that my 5.29s would take a year to ship. And that was an estimate, meaning longer. Contemplating if I should just go with 4.88s and keep the 33s. Especially with fuel prices going the way they are.

What options are available for 4.88s and the average ship times?

I took the plunge and am having the nitro 4.88’s installed on my TRD pro. I have a KDMAX pro tune so I’m very interested to see how that all works together. I’m surprised more people don’t go the KD max pro route on this thread so hopefully I’ll have a little to contribute. I’m interested to see how my highway driving is affected. I live in South Florida so 90+ on i75 is a fairly normal thing when passing. I’m running 33’s (trail grapplers), Retrax tonneau, sliders, and A LOT of sound insulation. Probably about 400 pounds over stock give or take. Hoping I’ve got my truck’s road manors close to dialed after this. Fingers crossed.

 

Well, I got in touch with ECGS and they have 4.88's available. I'm doing the whole setup and going to ship the cores back to them. No front locker, but factory e locker in the rear. I decided to go with 4.88's over the 5.29's to keep me in check, lol. Saves me from having to do a ton of work and spend a bunch of extra money to tuck 35's. So it's settled. Ship time 3-4 weeks and hopefully only a couple weeks after they arrive I'll get them installed. Definitely a "peace of mind" thing for me to have a great company like ECGS do all the legwork. It's their bread and butter! Not a bad price at all too, once the cores are sent back. Kind of feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. No more trying to plan and do things like a CMR, buying spindles, etc etc... Just a CMC and I'll be g2g.

 

BIG HEADS UP to anyone ordering Nitro gears…… long story short, nitro is shipping 4.88 gear packages WITHOUT the rear master install kit… no heads up, no marking on the box, no reductions in price. They’re not even letting the distributors/retailers know. I just spent the last 2 days chasing my own tail because when the installer said it was missing, I went to where I purchased the kit, they ended up opening 3 separate kits, they all looked the same so we couldn’t figure out discrepancy until someone got the correct person at nitro that said they’re sending out the kit without the rear master install kit because they’re on back order.

If I knew about the missing parts I could’ve made other arrangements… you can actually order everything in the kit from Toyota, but they’re not stocked at dealers and need 24 hours for fulfillment (total cost about $400 which also sucks).

I totally understand supply chain issues are a nightmare right now, but to leave people high and dry doesn’t feel great.

 

Looking for confirmation on my life choices. 2017 double cab short bed with the 6 speed manual. Stock suspension with Sumo springs and TRD SEMA wheels with 31.5 by 9.5 tires and I don't think I will ever go bigger. Future considerations are front and rear bumpers, sliders and a winch with a 2" lift to get me back to stock height. I occasionally tow small travel trailers. I live in Oregon where the speed limit is low and I never go more than 70. 4.88s or consider the 5.29s?

UNLESS you really need a granny 1st gear, but you can get that in 4LOW, and better 2LOW with the mod. 4.88 I say.

Not many folks with 5.29 MT, I don't think.

 

Your stock manual setup is almost the exact same as an automatic with 5.29 as far as cruising in top gear. I'm sure it's been done but you would spin your engine to the moon with 5.29. I had the calculations written down at one point but with a little Google skill you can figure out what your engine speed will be with different ratios

 

What’s the price difference between 4.88 and 5.29 not including labor?
I am currently on 33.7 tires,sliders,front bumper,winch,possibly a shell soon. Tires at MTs and I am looking to change to 35 ATs. I have the kd max tune. You think I’ll be fine at the 4.88? Really just trying to keep cost down as I want to also install front and rear lockers at the same time.

 

Can you advise me on this comment?

I have a 6MT and started looking into gearing and 99% of everything I have read is reviews of automatic trucks.

 

If you are planning 35s, 5.29 is where you wanna be. Price wise... Negligible.

 

4.88 it is.

 

Don't forget to add a tune in top of it. Yes, it's more $ but it'll be worth it by itself alone

 

I will be doing the overland one after I get the gears done.

 

Going to be doing gearing soon (finally). I believe 4.88s would be the best fit for my setup but wanted to run it by the group first.

v6 Automatic.
34" tires (285/75/17)
Minimal additional weight (SSO Bumper + Winch, Sliders, Aluminum Skid plate)
No intention of adding any additional armor

With that in mind, i think 4.88s are probably the best fit but again wanted to gauge thoughts?

 

I would guess most people are going to say 5.29. I have maybe 200lbs extra weight on 285/70/17 with 4.88 and I still use fifth gear a fair bit on the highway when I get into any sort of decent incline. I don't think that's a bad thing though. For daily driving on mostly highway it works really well. My guess is that the deciding factor is going to be how much stop and go driving you do and how fast you want to do it vs. How much high speed highway you do
