Yeah, it’s crazy how bad the salt is on Toyota frames in particular. My 2019 had 30k miles on it when I sold it. 15 months driving and I tried to keep it out of the salt and all the welds were rusty and the control arms starting. I couldn’t believe it.

Anybody in here work on commercial diesel trucks or have knowledge and can potentially help?

Peterbilt work truck is throwing codes for contaminated DEF and its sensor 2 days after it's PM service at Peterbilt (and has been sitting at the dealer since that, we noticed the dash lights when we picked it up that they didnt see?). How does DEF become contaminated as we never had these codes before it was at the shop? Peterbilt is trying to say it is 8 hours labor (and could have been more but "they took off some labor hours off the bill") to drop DEF tank, drain/blow out lines and replace some filters which seems rather outrageous. I kinda feel something fishy with it considering we buy all our DEF in drums from this dealer but I'm also not a diesel mechanic, clearly :notsure:. Any help, helps! Sorry its not a Taco post.

I can’t imagine a def sensor being terribly difficult to replace, it probably uses conductivity or something to determine the condition of the fluid. Find the def tank and the sensor won’t be far away I’m sure.

They also said they tested the DEF and that it was out of spec which is why they would need to drain and flush. That its supposed to be 32% urea the rest deionized water, and its 35%. But when you put it that way, could they be telling me its at 35% to get more labor hours out of it when it could only be the sensor? They never sent me any readings or documentation on the DEF spec testing showing it was at 35% unless its just something the computer can read.

It was already at the shop and we didn't really have the chance to bring it back here since they said it could go into limp mode and my driver ended up leaving it. It is all pretty easily accessible as its all mounted on the outside of the truck near driver door/gas tank.

id ask for some more documentation and results of that test yes. An out of spec reading should be confirmed with a known calibrated instrument before suspecting either the fluid or the sensor is at fault. Sounds weird that would happen if it wasn’t like that before you gave it to them, especially if they are saying the fluid actually is out of spec.

My exact thoughts, something seems little weird to me. And i dont know too much about DEF. But fuck they could have dropped some tap water in the DEF tank for all i know just to throw it off. I'd hate to think any tech/dealer would do that but i guess never know with some.

If the urea reading is at 35% instead of 32 that means adding the proper amount of water would get it back in the correct measurement. Is it possible that the water portion evaporated either from the drum prior to filling or from the truck?

These emissions systems are pretty easy to diagnose. DEF doesn’t really go bad unless sitting for long periods of time. but the DEF sensor is inside the tank and part of the sending unit. depending on the location of the tank and where the lines have to go from to get to the back of the DEF injector this could take time. I work on the machine application side of it but they are all the same.

Id say 8 hours is a generous quote though dealerships always quote high and never take back the time they quoted high for. Ill bet it took an experienced tech 5 hours to disassemble and reassemble the entire system not sure why they would flush the lines with air though considering DEF dissolves in water when in crystal form I always flush with water back to tank flush the fill neck tube to tank and remove tank drain it and wipe it out. I just did the DEF heater and pump on my 16 duramax work truck.

the filter in a DEF system is also in the tank on the pick up tube. some look like a felt sock others are odd shapes and small and clip onto the end of the line. Id like to know what the codes they found actually were what they mean and the troubleshooting steps they used to come to the root cause of the issues.

I’m sorry who are you? Maybe you should meet someone before you bust their balls. Its not nearly as funny when strangers do it.

Though if you must know that was from the DOT trooper that stopped me last week to check my truck.

pics of the duramax work truck? Its just a company truck. 2016. Nice ride.

I got no dog in this fight, but a word of caution from personal experience: Be careful posting any pics of your work ride that includes the company phone number on it unless you're the one who answers the phone.
