RSI Smart Cap

Yup, just went and snagged one.... this is the driver side corner against the back of the bed where it meets the cab..... it has the angled lip that sticks out, and the part circled in purple with my wonderful drawing skills is the lip that had a 1/2 - 1 inch gap when I picked up the truck. I just loosened the clamps and slid it back flush. That is when I noticed the tailgate portion lined up perfectly with that curve.

 

lining up with the interior as opposed to the exterior is a unique approach if that is what the cap designer intended. To me, it appears short and it seems like simply adding a couple inches to the end cap (on either end) would make it appear more fitted. My $0.02 and worth what you paid.

 

Hah, yeah I agree completely, actually. I guess their logic is to fit that lip to the 3 bed sides, and the tailgate portion would then just line up (except each of my bed sides has a gap in some spots and flush in others, maybe that’s a sign for bed stiffeners?).

If I could change anything, it would actually be to make it a couple inches taller, I don’t see a lot of reason for it to match the roof line and having a little more overhead room inside would come in handy. Creating sloped angles on the outside also reduces inside dimensions. It would probably just add to the utilitarian look that it already achieves.

 

2nd Gen caps finally coming in. We have a couple left for Free Installation if anyone wants one.

 

Only the short bed seems to have the issue of appearing stubby. My long bed model fits very nicely, although I will be checking the inner alignment now based off the pic @minium when I get the chance.

 

Got my second gen cap installed. Very happy with it.

 

Any tips on the lowest profile way of mounting my RTT?

 

Hard to get photo but you can see the shrader valve is on top and the lower right you can see the electrical tape (tire 1), I also put papertowel in the gap as it's not 100%. But I could reach back into the cooler and in the winter I can open the window and defrost the back a bit if needed. Wrapped the bottom 1/3 in electrical tape so it fits snugly at the bed/cab interface but doesn't stop the window from open/closse and the top part is expanded to keep 'most' of the snow/rain out (tire 2).

Man, that sure looks sick! Still waiting on mine. Should be here soon. Just as I expected, the rear hatch lines up much better since the 2nd Gen has a straight profile tailgate. Very clean overland look with the EvoA!

 

Don't put it on your cap. Seriously thought about the best way to install a RTT to not adversely impact mileage and that would be a low profile rack the "hides" the RTT behind the cab.

Oops! Well, your RTT is aerodynamic.

 

You can make a low profile rack very easy using Smartcap track nuts if you’re interested I can send you pictures.

My RSI is coming in probably early next week, not sure if it’s gonna make my rear end sag or not without one but I guess we shall see.

 

Are you otherwise stock? I would get a set of SummoSprings for $200, takes 20 minutes to install them. If you haven’t heard of them before, they are just foam core bump stop replacements but it takes the initial sag out and maintains stock ride height when you have a little extra weight in the back (similar to airbags without the hassle of air or leaks).
