Why?? That’ll make it less reliable. You see all the problems the new Tundras are having with the turbo. Put that in sports cars or Diesels only. Also op I wouldn’t get your hopes up for a 4th gen Tacoma, it’ll probably be electric by then sadly.

the tundra is just coming out and it will/does have quirks. but what is wrong with ford f150 2.7 or 3.5 twin turbo engines? they seem to be fine. they are hauling heavy loads and seem to rack up the miles.

and if the new Tacoma's are electric, even better. less stuff to break. more torque. less stuff to worry about. nothing wrong with going electric. except the charging time.

Keep the 2nd gen and wait for the 4th. 3rd gen is great, a rugged truck like the 2nd gen however we’re halfway through it’s life cycle already. The 4th will probably have a linked rear like the new tundra and a hybrid or electric option. Better mpg, better ride, more power. Hybrids are reliable these days and so are turbo systems. They wouldn’t put one in the land cruiser platform if it was unreliable.

Keep. You'd be buying at the zenith of the new one's cost right now, not ideal. Your current vessel addresses your needs just fine.

Get a quote on the paint work and give her a good cleaning. Even if you decide to sell it anyway, those things will behoove you either way.

    Welcome!

A few additions to make me feel cool.
It is just my opinion. My work truck is a new Silverado crew cab with an 8 speed and the 2.7 turbo. When I received it I was dreading it. After driving it I have zero complaints. I have the same platform with the 5.3 and the 2.7 is a competitor. It tows fine, has torque and makes 310HP and you never feel it shift. You can set the cruise at 85MPH and it never feel strained driving through the mountains. The truck is light, full size never feels strained. You can have all this for the same price point as the 3rd gen. I was in your boat, I am a displacement guy. However, after I actually got off my soapbox and drove one of these things. I was eating my words. And I average 19MPG around town and out on the highway over a 1,900 mile trip which included driving through the sierras averaged 24.7MPG with stretches getting over 30MPG bumping down the freeway with the cruise set at 85MPH in states where the speed limit is 80. You should drive one!

    Nothing major yet.
I had a rental truck with the 2.7 and 8 speed and it was very rough at 35,000 miles. It was misfiring and the transmission slipped in 1st and 2nd. Given 35,000 rental miles are much harder than 35,000 of someone taking care of it, but still.

Id agree but my apprehension would come from having a GM vehicle not necessarily the spec. Having owned a couple GM trucks and used one for a previous work vehicle (2019 2.7T) I can say, when it was running, it drove great! My only issue was the reliability. The company I worked for had to invest in quite a bit of maint time and money. Obviously all GM/Chevy products are not like that, but it was enough to scare me off putting down any of my hard earned money.

As to the OPs question, having just taken delivery of a 2020 3rd gen about two weeks ago, I can say most all the Toyota dealers I've spoken to are putting "market adjustment" cost of 5k on cars and 8k on trucks, so I might shy away from new. The used market is nearly as rough atm so its on you to decide of you can make enough profit on the sale of your current Taco to offset the purchase of a newer one.
I personally got lucky when I went to sell my 2013 JKRU and made a profit of $4200-ish over MSRP................but that was quickly ALL eaten up by the purchase of my used 2020 OR.
I would probably do some paint and upkeep at the moment, but it might even be worth re-painting and selling after that with re-sale being what it is these days, but of course that is all up to how much you think you can get out of it and how much you can get all the re-paint and work done for. Offsetting costs and the like

I do not disagree. As I do not own the truck reliability is not really a concern for me. Also why mine have 5.3's. That said, I have driven a 2020 GM offering and it was a dog. They made significant changes to the 2021 and newer models and it shows. Reliability, only time will tell but this platform has been proven to achieve as many miles as even the precious Tacoma. A lot depends on how you treat and maintain your vehicle. Keeping that in perspective, most people effing around on a truck forum would probably be served fine.

I still have a lot of respect for Toyota. The ones I had served me extremely well. I am just at a point in my life where I am done making excuses for a manufacturer who remains in the stone age and tops the pricing market. I am not going to make excuses or get tunes to make up for where the manufacturer is lacking. I drove several 3rd gens. I did not care for them. Felt underpowered, the interior was not comfortable or to my liking and I am not a fan of the front end. I am not going to say, oh. You have to get up in the higher RPM range to feel its power. Its gutless and not particularly fuel efficient. Yes it might provide you 300k trouble free miles but who wants to drive a gutless pig for 300k. I am just over it. Just my .2 cents.

Has anyone got any good sources for 2023? Is it a complete change from 2016+?

I am doubtful you will see any dramatic change in the Tacoma until 2026 or beyond and I expect that will be electric.

From everything I’ve read and the fact that Toyota of Japan said there will a hybrid model in all models by 2025 for the states, the 4th gen will come out in 2025 and be a hybrid. They also announced they have no intentions of bringing a full electric Tacoma to the states.

    Oh look, another mod....

    Reasons to keep it:

    1) It's paid off. You're saving (depending on the loan amount and interest rate) $500 per month.
    2) It doesn't have any serious or minor issues (you weren't that forth coming about that, but you don't have to be).
    3) You get free lifetime basic maintenance on it from the dealer. This is another big savings.
    4) You like the color of the truck and cannot find the color that you do like. If you're going to pay big money, get exactly what you want and what you don't want.
    5) The market is banana's right now. They're selling SR's and SR5's for what TRD Offroads use to sell for 2yrs ago. On top of that, you'll have to wait up to 6 months.

    Reasons to buy new:

1)It's a shiny new truck that smells new. I get it. We all get it. It's a pretty shiny object. But that new will wear off, then you realize you're stuck with a big ass truck payment.

Use the money you save to re-paint it, wrap it or try to wax/polish the hell out of it. If you love that truck, it'll love you back.

Id say start looking for the exact truck you want. It takes time to get it to dealers now. You have the luxury of waiting to find the right rig. Start the process and put that deposit on a newbie and just wait for her

Throw some money, maybe 3 payments worth, at it in repairs or mods.

Has the frame been replaced, any rust issues? (not sure where you are located) If newer frame and/or no rust present. I would get the roof wrapped, hood repainted, and replace/polish out those front headlights and keep running her.
Would be interested to see what a dealer would offer for trade-in or what a private sale would bring for it in this market though..

Keep it. I had a third generation TRD Off Road. The transmission and motor were too much for me. Going to Texas tomorrow to pick up a really sharp 2012 Access Cab TRD Off Road with fewer miles than my 2013 SR5 Access Cab 4X4. I plan to keep it for years.

I'm not sold on the 3rd gen grill either. I wish they had put the 4Runner grill on them, at least for an option
