Hi there, my dad and I pitched in and bought a new 2022 sr tacoma v6 4x4. My mom driven it a couple times and said that there's a "weird brake feeling" like when she's braking she feels and I quote " its hitting something when braking at a certain point (note she has not driven a brand new vehicle before but she has driven a 2016 camry) her current vehicle is a 1995 4runner 4x4. Both my parents have taken the truck back to the dealer and they said that there is nothing wrong with the truck and said that all the new trucks have that type of feeling. The truck is literally brand new and we put about 240 miles, I'm assuming the truck needs a break in period. The truck does have 245/75r16 tires... does that have any affect on it? I've just driven it and I can't find what she's feeling when braking. Has anyone also have that feeling? I'm just gonna assume that she just paranoid because we bought a new truck so anything that doesn't feel right she's gonna assume something is wrong. LMAO:frusty:

Your mother could be overly sensitive, I know my wife had a similar comment regarding my Tacoma - they're trucks, they won't feel like your ordinary 4DR sedan.

That is exactly what I am saying you can't compare a new truck to a sedan or a old suv.

Could be the drum disc break combination, and the light rear end of the truck. My 2nd gen regular cab, which is very light never felt like any other truck I've driven. Those have always been heavier vehicles. The brakes on the Tacoma always felt normal to me, but the truck always felt a little squirrelly when braking. I can't recall ever getting on the brakes hard in that truck.

My TRD OR has that feeling. But I believe it’s the electric brake booster. Not sure if your ‘22 has that since it’s a sr

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
My '21 TRD OR (auto) requires a bit more pedal pressure to achieve the desire braking effect when I compare to my bride's '16 Camry, To me, the Camry's brakes are overly sensitive and requires very little pedal pressure. So little in fact that when I drive her car the first few times that I hit the brakes I'll almost put folks through the windshield. If you're used to the Camry, driving the Taco seems like you have to literally stand on the brake pedal (exaggerating a bit). I think both are normal for the vehicle.

It's a double cab short bed tacoma. Would it still be considered light in the rear end? If that's the case I guess I have to offset the weight with a camper or something.

When I drove the truck to be honest it felt normal to me and I've never driven a new truck before. I hate driving the family camry brakes so sensitive I'm tapping it with my toes.

Brake booster feels weird in Tacomas. I about die every time I change over to my work truck the first time I brake in comparison. It's normal, as long as it's consistent and stops harder the harder you press and locks to ABS engagement on full panic stomp you're good.

The amount of travel in the pedal before you feel the brakes slow you down and see the brake lights on feels weird to me since new. It feels like the first 50% of pedal travel is essentially a dead zone.

Same here- absolutely terrible brakes. The saving grace is that you get used to it and compensate. Trouble is that when I get in my wife's Audi I tend to put the seatbelt to the test just leaving the driveway.

could be the transmission downshifting. each downshift feels like a small bump.

FWIW, I have a 2018 and I sometimes get a "clunk" from the brakes, especially if I step on the brake forcefully. Works fine otherwise.

When I first got my 2021 I noticed fast vibrations in the brake pedal and read about the brake booster. I mentioned it during the first service appointment and the techs apparently took things apart, reassembled and the vibrations haven't been back. Not sure what the actual problem was but maybe the brakes just need a quick break down at your next appointment.

Though it is new, could be air in the lines. Maybe drums need adjusting? Is she bottoming out the brakes to an ABS point?
    Ride with her and observe.

To be honest I think its all in the head. Later down the after paying it off I'm plan doing upgraded rotors , brakes and steel braided lines the whole works so if there is anything wrong with, which I doubt, it will be sorted.

English is her second language so translating exactly what she said is quite the challenge lol, but the dealer went through everything and they said there's nothing wrong so I'm pretty sure she's trying to make me sell the truck.

I have always felt like the brakes are inconsistent depending on situations and foot pressure. But I had already read about that and expected it while driving, so it hasnt really been a problem. Just more of a mental adjustment for my expectations.
