My first house had asbestos laced popcorn ceilings. They were dirty and stained and there was no way in hell my wife would have let me scrape them with a new baby in the house. (which was fine with me because there was no way in hell I was going to scrape them with me in the house ). Rented a spray gun and sealed them in place with a nice coat of white paint. Not my proudest DIY moment and I'm sure subsequent owners have cursed my name.

That's an idea. It risks creating asbestos dust and all the insulation in the attic will come down with the ceiling.

 

Popcorn ceilings are high in asbestos. No thank you.

Mine wouldnt scrape off without damaging the drywall. Soaked in vinegar and water and still wouldnt scrape off. Just had my guy put another layer on. I think he charged an additional $350 to hang and finish for the 10'x14' room. Well worth it to me.

 

Well shit, they weren't using Asbestos in the 1990's were they!?

 

It shouldn't if you don't overdo it. The popcorn ceiling will absorb most if it.

I hope not. My asbestos popcorn ceilings were from the 70's. (also aluminum wire. FUCK aluminum wire!)

 

Says the CPSC:

• Asbestos may be present in textured paint and in patching compounds used on wall and ceiling joints. Their use was banned in 1977.

I figured I was safe to scrape the popcorn from my 1980 built ceilings.

 

A little more progress today, will have to think about the rails for the parts organizers. Unsure if I'll continue with the pvc corner moulding or use something else.

 

I think saying they are high in asbestos content is a reach. Not to take asbestos lightly though. That’s even if your home has asbestos in the popcorn ceiling. As long as your careful pulling it down and with proper PPE you’re fine. Removing a couple of sheets isn’t a big job. Also not a fan of the added weight.

Hopefully he marked the location of the joists and used proper length fasteners. I’ve seen some people just blast screws everywhere, mostly only biting into existing drywall.

 

Its all in the joists.

Im surprised you were behind that method. We are getting a house (maybe, nightmare process) that has popcorn ceilings likely with asbestos that we want removed or covered and was curious what the general consensus would be, especially from full time builders.

 

If its done right, screwed to the joists etc, theres nothing really wrong with it. The only beef I have with it is when you wanna cut out for new fixtures it can be a pain with just a keyhole saw.

 

As long as the drywall is correctly fastened with the right length screws its no problem

 

It'll be a nice view though.
