About to do a 200,000km (125,000miles) service at Toyota. What costs should I expect?

Hey everyone, so I purchased a used 2011 Tacoma TRD Sport from a car lot a few weeks ago. They safetied it and everything but I don't think they did any preventative maintenance. I'll be taking her into a Toyota dealership for the 200k service. They wouldn't quote me a price or anything else. Trying to get a sense of what they'll be servicing and what kind of cost I can expect.

On top of this, they said I have an outstanding recall. They might need to apply corrosion compounds to the frame. The previous owner had the entire bottom of the vehicle sprayed with a thick black rubber-like coating to protect it from rust. Therefore, I have no idea what condition the frame is in. All I have to go off is a "Rust Check 2021" green sticker in the driver's door well. How will they be able to tell if I need just a compound or a whole new frame? When I got under the car for the first time, the spare wheel was absolutely rusted through to hell. Chips of metal were falling off it and removing the side-steps revealed a lot of rusted bolts holding them in. I'm afraid the frame is in similar condition and the rust-proof spray was put on to cover it up. How can I convince them to swap my frame out under the recall so I don't have to pay for that?

    Thanks in advance :)

    Top of my head, probably

    diff fluid exchange
    Engine oil
    Radiator flush
    Brake oil
    Spark plugs
    Power steering flush

About the frame, don’t quote me, but I think they hit it with a screwdriver or a hammer and check for weak spots. And they will replace it if there is a hole thru the frame.

Very helpful, thank you! Do you think a used car lot would have done any of these?

Doubtful. I bet most change the oil and that's about it.

That's what I was afraid of. Newbie question, but if I ask the dealership's mechanics to first check the fluid levels/quality before changing them, will that save me any cash if any are actually fresh?

Well they can change if they are level, which I bet most of them are….but that isn’t the issue. Usally all of the fluids don’t go away or disappear, unless you have a leak.

what happens is over time the fluids break down and loose their cooling power and the ability to make everything run smoothly. I know you can check the brake fluid to see how much moisture there is in it. Other fluids, not sure. I think most places won’t bother to check the quality and just tell you to change it.

And depending on your level of comfort, you can do some of those things pretty easy on your own too. Engine oil and differential fluid require very little tools and there are helpful tutorials on here to guide you.

Yep thought as much. Frame is covered under the recall if it's fucked though, so hopefully not too screwed.

OP, my first question to the dealership would have been, how are you unable to quote me a price? They know what services they’re doing. I would be uncomfortable giving my truck to anyone and essentially handing them a blank check.

Also consider doing as much as possible of the maintenance yourself. If you were in my area I’d be happy to help.

Yeah I did the oil and breaks myself, considering doing the transmission fluid too. Anything else you thing someone with minor skills can do?

Years ago a dealer quoted me ~$450 for a spark plug change (6 iridium plugs).

Huh. They told me I had an open recall, that's all. I'm in Canada, so hoping it's different here. Hope the frame is just fine

That's some nightmare shit. Will be asking for a detailed billing sheet PRIOR to any work. I need to go there for an alignment anyway, so won't be a complete waste of time if they try to do something this crazy

Differentials and transfer case, easy. Coolant if it’s on the list. Spark plugs.

I never pass on the opportunity to rage on dealers. My truck came with free oil changes. The last one the dealer did, I drove home and found this drip can in the engine bay. You can see the rub marks from the serpentine belt.

Here is what a local Toyota did -
    · Replace cabin air filter
    · Replace engine air filter
    · Replace engine oil and oil filter
    · Replace spark plugs
    · Replace vacuum pump for brake booster (if equipped)
    · Rotate tires
    · Check installation of driver’s floor mat
    · Inspect and adjust all fluid levels
    · Inspect wiper blades
    · Lubricate propeller shaft (4WD)
    · Re-torque propeller shaft bolt

    Inspect the following:

    · Automatic transmission fluid cooler hoses and connections
    · Ball joints and dust covers
    · Brake lines and hoses
    · Brake linings/drums and brake pads/discs
    · Drive belts
    · Drive shaft boots (4WD)
    · Engine coolant
    · Exhaust pipes and mountings
    · Front differential oil (4WD)

They should provide a quote (before working on it) when you take it. They charged $280 for the work above and then additional amounts for fluids that had to be added and grease where needed. About $320 total. They will quote you on any work they recommend that they recommend be completed.
They will check what they can on the frame but not where the rubberized coating is. And they probably won't warranty anything done on the frame because of the rubberized coating.

Do as much as you can yourself. Find an independent mechanic to do the rest. The dealerships only get to see my trucks if it is a warranty or recall issue they are paying for. Most independent shops charge at least 1/2 what you'll pay at the dealer.
