I have a lot of scrap pine around so I can try some things on that. I'm not too concerned with the pine box - it was made from the scrap and is rough anyway. Worst comes to worst I can paint it. It's going to live in the garage and just hold random stuff.

I ended up sanding it. Hard. Got most everything off, then used a penetrating stain on the whole thing. Still looks like crap, but I'm moving on. I'll revisit the finish another time. I glued in the hidden barrel hinges on the bottom (actually used epoxy) yesterday. I'll need to enlarge the holes in the top in order to get enough movement to line the top up when I epoxy the top onto the hinge. That was practice for how I want to glue up the walnut box. I'll do both the top and bottom at the same time, close the lid and get everything lined up. Let the epoxy cure for 8 hours and see if it opens!

Today I made a tray for the dowel pin markers that are going in the box. I cut down a rift sawn oak floor board and made this thing. It's just held together with a big rubber band for now. I've got to sand and shape it for a tighter fit. The little magnets and the forstner bit drilled flat holes work great.

I actually really like it. Fairly easy to work with. I did this Stove Top Cover for a customer in December so I could test out flattening it on my CNC. This is stained with Varathane HoneyA3753D83-49AE-405A-8F52-F6821F23FC87.jpg

Picture quality doesn't do it justice but I love the grain on it. Red Elm is up there with my favorite Cherry now.

I just got a notification of a shipment from MLCS. It's the tapered drill counter-sink bit set I ordered in November...of 2020

Finally made time to lower my outfeed table to match the height of my new table saw.

Looks good. Going to add miters? Where's your router table? I didn't want to fork out the cash to add one to my table saw, so I built one into my outfeed table, just an unsolicited suggestion.

Props to all of you guys for the work you do. Woodworking is so complex and I've learned so much in just doing 2-3 small projects. Tons of mistakes made, lessons learned, new tools bought, old tools thrown away, and room to grow. I'm happy with my outcome (a DIY computer desk/TV table at the moment), but man was it a job. I'm 100% confident woodworking is not in the works for my career path haha.

Router table is in the wing of my table saw. I installed a Jessem lift and I love it.

What are you favorite tool(s) to use in the shop? Every time I use the Palm Router, it just hits different, hah. Love those things but I 100% need a Router Table eventually.

I can tell you its NOT a hand plane.. I failed miserably trying to use one for the first time on my computer desk tabletop. Ended up making a janky router sled, used the wrong kind of router bit, and had to just sand as much as I could with a belt sander to get the tabletop as flat as I could with my limited building experience. I do really love my router though. I was able to carve a channel into the outside perimeter of the tabletop, inlay some aluminum C channel, install LED strip, and finished off with some light diffusing material. If not for that cool feature of the desk, I think it would've been completely wrecked by most people's standards lol.
