2001 Manual 5spd tranny fluid change

Hey TW,

I've followed a couple videos recently trying to understand what should be a very simply fluid change. I'm told that both the filler and drain plug bolts ar 24mm (15/16sae). I'm finding what looks to be the fill plug to be smaller than this. Also, based on the videos I've watched, these plugs should be relatively close to each other, but on mine they are not. I'll post pics below so you can get an idea. Just looking for some guidance here and to make sure I don't screw this up.

75w-90 synthetic gear oil. I've seen some say Toyota recommends conventional, but they didn't have that available. is synthetic fine or is that a hard no?

 

First pic is your transfer case, that isn’t your transmission.

Both have their own fill/drain plugs

 

Both take 75w90 gear oil, GL4 or GL5 (differentials only take GL5)

Synthetic is fine

thanks for the replies everyone. So I should be draining and filling both the tranny and the transfer case?

 

They don't have to be done at the same time but I think the mileage interval for them is the same, so it's usually good to knock them both out at once.

Probably good to do the front/rear diffs too while at it...diffs, t-case and manual trans all use gear oil. Only with the diffs you want to make sure to use GL5 rated gear oil only, t-case and trans can take GL4 or GL5.
