Hi all, new to the forum, happy to be here!

I bought and installed a Hooke roof rack onto my truck a few months back, and I want to put a kayak rack up there too. However, I see most kayak racks are for crossbar roof racks. Are there any compatible with the Hooke brand ones? Link is below for the roof rack I have.

I have been throwing kayaks on top of any rack for many many years. Just slide it up there and ratchet strap it down. You don't have to have any kind of fancy carrier. I've taken my kayaks and paddle board that way across the country, through the rockies, Tetons, into Canada etc. Look at my profile pic. That's a diy unistrut rack.

@banditcamp Well through your 3 pixels on your profile picture haha, I can see it's pretty straightforward. I don't even need any foam blocks? I can buy tie-down points separately right?

With the lights in the way can you put your kayak up there without a j style rack?

Yeah you can add tie down points. I didn't add foam blocks. I've seen people cut those foam pool noodles and wrap around there cross bars.

I'm thinking you have enough room to fit universal kayak carriers? Hard to say since I haven't seen that rack in person.
    https://www.etrailer.com/Watersport...FKiBcCSwXQN3DcmwpjRtGFJOG-MjyCqoaAoDREALw_wcB
Just position them as far forward and back as possible.
What kind of kayak do you have?
I feel like I could start a rental or tour company with how much kayaks I've accrued over the years (8 I think?) which range from single paddle, two man, and Hobie kayaks.
If you plan to use without any carriers, then I'd recommend positioning the kayak upside down so the kayak side rails take the weight and force from the tie down straps. Kayaks deform and warp easy if on the hull with pressure.

@Musubi3 The bars are a little too thick for that I believe. But that's all right, I think I'll just put it face down and getting some NRS loop straps and tie downs.
I haven't bought a kayak yet but I plan to. Any recommendations? I'm thinking about getting a two-person one. Also more storage if I paddle alone.

Any J-hook carrier will work with the Hooke roof rack. I have the Swiss Cargo foldable carrier on my Prinsu rack which has similar crossbars as the
    Hooke roof rack.

How are you planning on using the kayak? Just cruising, or doing a fishing setup?
All of my kayaks were bought and setup with fishing and diving in mind, although I do occasionally use them for cruising too. I've heard good things about Jackson Kayaks and Stealth Kayaks. I use Ocean Kayaks. All of these brands have two person versions. If money and weight is not a concern, you can check out Hobie Kayaks. While they have paddle versions, they're more known for their foot peddle capability and they're super efficient. They're pricier and a bit heavier in comparison, but I can range for miles without stopping. I'd also check out Wilderness Systems for their kayaks since they have a good variety. I'm limited in Hawaii with the vendors and shipping to here.

Whichever kayak you get, make sure the cradle will fit the kayak nicely, if you plan to use a cradle. I say that because although they're typically universal, some might be a bit small to fit larger two-man's or cumbersome to put up there. Just gotta think about how you're planning to load it and unload it.

So you like those peddle driven ones? I've never had one but I've tried those peddle boats before and you get real tired and not go very far. I've been looking at the kayaks with the small trolling motor

Maybe it depends on the brand you tried? I know there are several companies out there making peddle driven ones. Between myself and my friends (6 friends with Hobies kayaks), the Hobie kayaks are night and day difference in effort. The effort you put in and how it transfers to forward motion is very efficient. I haul a lot of gear when I dive and I like to range about 8 to 10 miles roundtrip along the coast (open ocean), including my large ice bag. I wouldn't dare do that even for half the distance in my paddle kayaks.

One thing nice about the peddle kayak is how well they cut through the wind (without a paddle catching wind). I've been out in 25 knot winds (not ideal and try to avoid) and I'll still easily make headway through it with my gear.

Nice! I'll be looking into those. I've done some ocean kayaking (Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico) the gulf is way calmer than the Atlantic and I'm sure the Pacific is a whole other world. I'd love to make it to Hawaii someday.

You simply sandwich the Hooke bars between the kayak carrier metal plates then twist knobs to tightened. Fits round bars or bars like yours.

@Musubi3 I'll mainly just be cruising on it. I'll search up the brands, I'll most likely just get the paddle version, but I have seen the Hobie ones in action and they're cool
