It was just a routine day at work for biologist Doug Killam - until he pulled this whopping 4ft-long salmon out of a Californian creek.
Mr Killam had been conducting a survey of salmon when he came across the monster fish which had died after spawning.
According to his calculations, Mr Killam determined that the live weight of the fish was 88lbs (6stone) and was between five and six years of age.

Supersized: Mr Killam with the six-stone Chinook salmon

Mr Killam said: 'I have counted tens of thousands of salmon during my career, and this is the biggest I have ever seen.'
The fish was found in Battle Creek, a spawning tributary of the Sacramento River near the town of Red Bluff.

Tall tale: Mr Killam shows off the 4ft-long fish
The fish is a pacific salmon, which die after spawning, so counting the dead carcasses is a common method to estimate the numbers of salmon spawning in each stream.

However most of the spawned-out salmon found on such counts weigh between 20 and 30 pounds.

That is a big ass fish...

On more than one occassion I've seen people hauling in 60 - 75 pound King's. Anywhere from 50-60 pounders are not that uncommon up here.

Here is a 97lb 4oz King that was caught in the Kenai River back in the 80's, it was a record then, but I think that record has been broken.

I have lots of fishing memories of Les Anderson (record holder, still). My pops and I would go fish with him once a year. Sweet old man. Never wanted the attention. Loads of humility in that guy. They estimate that his fish was actually 102 pounds BEFORE the dehydration that takes into effect once their out of the water. I think it was several hours before it was weighed.

    Where's your proof please?

Close family friend of ours owns the current world record for Lingcod.... 83.6 or something like that. He was chartering 6 people and as soon as they brought it up he had a gut feeling. He looked over at them and asked if they wanted to keep fishing or get it weighed. Needless to say they gassed it back to Homer.. They were also smart enough to stitch up the mouth so it wouldn't throw up anything that was in the stomach (as those deep water fish normally do).

Lingcod are so weird looking. My first fish ever was a skate. Talk about a strange looking fish! It is basically a manta ray. Not what I was expecting to pull out of the water.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder my friend! I love how lings have a gigantic head proportionally speaking. And nothing is cooler then the bright blue meat of one that's been hanging out in the kelp beds.

Skates and rays have one good thing to them : no bones on the wings! Slap them straight on the grill!... If you can get over the ammonia smell lol

Like Fido's ass. That thing's spawned out so the meat's gone all mushy. None too fresh either.
