I did the same in the mid 80's but we figured how to change the price in the computer. On friday night at closing we would chang the price of gas to .009 cents a gallon fill up our cars and then change the price back to normal.

Branded gasoline has a proprietary additive package, if you buy at a Shell station you get Shell gas. If not the seller would be open to a lawsuit for product misrepresentation, you paid for the Shell brand product. The Department of Weights & Measures is responsible for keeping them honest.

If you buy at an unbranded station you probably get generic gas. The gas must meet federal and state regulations, which means it has a standard level of additives. However you may get Shell (or any other brand) if they could purchase it at an advantage.

A purchasing manager I worked for was a master of the spreadsheet, his commute was 100 miles per day and he used different brands at different times of the year for maximum mileage.
I had 4 XJ Cherokees, all would spark knock on hills unless you ran 89 octane fuel. Every time I tried Sheetz 89 they would immediately knock - I avoid Sheetz gas, they do have decent food however.

So brand can seem to matter for different vehicles, for a fair test you would probably need to run several tanks. I use Top Tier when available, Mobil, Exxon, Valero have all been good for me.

Yeah. I have decided to just stick with the Shell about 1 /12 miles from my home, even if somewhere else may be cheaper, which was the case, at least as of yesterday. Another station about 7 miles from my home was 35 cents cheaper. The truth is, since I no longer work, I don't put many miles on, so I figure I can afford to stay with one brand.

Man, I was hoping to see an 8-Track player, though I guess those were one their way out by 1983.
