I understand that completely, and really would love to be able to build most furniture to replace anything store bought in the house; but I've got a hell of a lot of learning to do. I think I got a little trigger happy and jumped into trying to hand plane before learning the basics of how to even set it up properly. I found myself going the wrong way with the grain (I now know) and getting tons of tearout, gouging the wood, and honestly just making more of a problem than I started with. I did the best I could with super limited knowledge and tools, but am very proud of the outcome. As I learn more from my mistakes though, I'm hoping the next project will come along a little better!

That's really the whole point.. learning and improving. No one is born with all the knowledge. We all have to start somewhere

I have not, but can if you guys care to see. Just disregard everything else in the room; its kinda just a placeholder for the time being and lots of things being moved around, so disregard any "decor". I'll also attach my other project, which was a DIY gaming headset stand/holder/thingy.

Couldn't figure out how to upload video, so just snagged a still shot from a video I took of it. The LED strip is RGB, and extremely customizable. It looks horrible in that pic at 100% brightness, but is pretty well diffused on lower brightness, so you can't see the individual LEDs. It usually doesn't stay on pink either, but that option is there if I want it! haha. The headset stand is oak with plexi sandwiched in between each piece. Each piece got a channel routed on the inside piece facing the plexi, and routes to a single wire coming out the backside. Those LEDs are also RGB.

Not gonna lie, first thing that popped into my head when I saw the first pic is "The devil went down to Georgia, he was looking for a soul to steal...". Now I'll have that song stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

Music equipment and pews make great wall art lol. Takes the attention away from the fact that some idiot tried to build a desk out of cheap warped 2x4s and 2x10s lol. I'm happy with the outcome though. I hope the grainy pic hides all the other imperfections haha. I'm happy with it though, and it serves it purpose at the end of the day. If I ever decide to build a better replacement, I'll have a fancy stained workbench for the future garage haha.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
I love using a router plane. I have no idea why but it just seems so fun and relaxing. The problem is I don't get to use it that often.

I despised my hand plane until I bought a Lie-Nielsen plane. That when I discovered how a plane was meant to be sharpened and adjusted. Now I have several of their planes and a couple of Stanleys. By seeing how a plane is supposed to be, I've been able to properly sharpen and setup my Stanleys to be almost as good. I'm always shocked at how nice a well sharpened and adjusted plane works, even on curly maple! I can get shavings that are less than 1/1000" thick. Mind bending.

I've had a couple of those for over a year now and just last week found my first use, they work great!

Don't have one; most of my forum time is spent on a work computer to just pass time, so the pew threads and forums are typically off limits. Also, those are airsoft replicas; the only ones I could recover from the boating accident. :anonymous:

@wilcam47 if you're running that through a planer on the end grain like that you're just asking for trouble. The wood can break out on the ends or the sides and not only ruin your piece but anything in its path.

The only way I've found to do end grain in a planer like that is to make a frame for it. I usually use scrap pine 2 x 4 and trim the height down to close to the thickness of your wood. By doing this, it reduces the chance of a tear out or a chunk of wood through the wall or your eye.

    Safety first gents!

Definitely. Not sure if it was this or the hickory board i was planing down causing the nicks. I do stay clear of inlet area. Just for that reason.

Ill do the planer box next time.
