Reviving this thread, I flat towed my '85 4Runner for thousands of miles, and have now towed my manual xmission '21 Taco 4x4 on a dolly for thousands more with no problem. Xfer case in 2 hi and xmission in neutral. So why can't I flat tow my Taco like that?

So you’re in the first gen section, better off making a thread in the 3rd gen section.

I just got a flatbed car hauler for this very reason. Initially intended to flat tow my 99 5 speed manual, but got put off by the conflicting info on here and the hard no in the owners manual.
Now that I have the flat trailer and have had to deal with loading and unloading, wdh’s and space issues I’m honestly eyeing just going flat tow anyways. Can’t imagine dealing with loading this thing as often as I would need to.

I'll be retiring in a few years and plan to flat tow my 98 4x4 5 speed. There is a large number of people that have done it without any issues over 10's of thousands of miles. Both the transfer case and the transmission depend only on splash lubrication.
