Coil spring rate

    I am considering running 5100 all around and OME 887 coils. No bumper, winch, weight up front. Looking for 2 inch + up front. Does this sound right? Or should I consider the OME Nitrochargers and coils? 886? 888?

    For the rear I was thinking either Dakar or icon AAL. No weight in bed really and currently 265/70 17 but may switch to 285s.

    Without a bumper or winch on a 3rd gen what I found is a nice ride for me is the OME887 with a 3/8 spacer and the softer valved Nitrochargers. Or you can go with 888's and get the same lift but a bit less droop. Similar ride but more likely to top out going over speed bumps which I found annoying. I have had 887s, 888s and 886s on my 3rd gen, and like the 887s with the 3/8 spacer best overall. Don't forget to lower the front bumpstops with a little spacer or upgrade them. Never tried the 5100.

    Thanks for chiming in. Very helpful info. I planned on doing the 887 with the spacer that OME sells. Is this what you used ?

    that's for the drivers side, basically adds 5mm preload to compensate for a taco lean towards the drivers side (battery and fuel tank both on drivers side) On top of that something like https://www.headstrongoffroad.com/store/p30/HS_1/2"_Top_Plate_Spacers_-_TT05512-TPS.html or in any case when you assemble your shocks use some extended studs. then you have the optionality to add a little spacer later if you don't want to right away. The 887s will still give you 2 inch lift right away, once they are broken in they will sag a bit and I added the spacer at that point.

    again that's just my set up... others might have different views. cheers

    How did the 886’s ride and how much lift did u get?

    just ordered 884’s should be about 1.5 lift on mine. Right now I have fox 2.0 on second notch about 1.5. Thinking add the 884’s and go back to first notch on the fox’s. Hope for a little better ride… it actually doesn’t ride bad now just seen if it will be better. To much time on my hands.

    Preload has no impact on ride quality or any other factor unless you are a moron and max your suspension out.

    Preload just adjust ride height at the expense of down travel but there is a window that most people work within which is why no one talks about it.

    What you actually need to consider is spring rate and shock valving, the latter 99% know nothing about.

    The battery and fuel tank don't contribute to taco lean, its actually a slight twist in the frame similar to the tundras

    Interesting… gonna measure frame now to check this out.

    but I’m not 100% agreeing with you on preload not having anything to do with ride quality. I’d sacrifice a little down travel with a lower spring rate rather than higher with no preload. Played with this back in 2012 on my second gen. And found it rode better on and off-road. BUT I didn’t have any extra weight to need the higher rate.

    If you add any spring that is not the Toyota factory OEM, you will void Bilsteins warranty. The 5100s are valved to work with the OEM only. Not to be confused with OME, lol. That's why they are less expensive than there rest, it's essentially an OEM upgrade from the 4600.

    Thanks for the warranty info. I ended up going with 6112 fronts and 5100 rears with new leaf pack out back.

    Thanks. So looks like the factory spring rate is around 400-600lbs/in?
