Was kinda hoping you'd try the extractor. Next time smaller drill bit lol. Usually with the extractors, anywhere the teeth can bite into the drilled hole, will grab. Congrats Rob. Having done that timing chain jobber before, you saved a lot of time.

 

My pops always used to say that the difference between a good and a great tech is their persistence. I hung onto those words especially during the extraction process because I refused to give up since everyone else was too scared to touch it and I think that's what helped me pull through. That, a diamond Dremel bit and a shiny new titanium drill bit set.

My mood went from frustrated all this week to ecstatically happy today. While I was at it I went ahead and replaced the two upper idler pulley bearings because they were unusually noisy and went ahead and ran the 89515 Dayco lower idler pulley. It bolted right up and plays really nicely with the setup despite the 6203 size. I switched out the tensioner to the original and am running the double bearing idler on it. Truck fired right up on test fire and is quiter than it has been in like two years. All is right in the world at last.

 

im doing my ripps, new s/c belt and back to a 2.5. then maybe hp time. where can i find leaf spring/pinion shims on short notice? napa maybe?

 

Most likely napa, yeah. I would check with them because they got all the good high performance stuff.

 

just really looking forward to a new driveshaft system. will need shim work. i think i can get it right on the 2nd try. meaning shims are a try and see despite my angle finders opinion.

 

for those that would ever care to consider a 1 pc driveline my customer service experience thus far from tom woods is A+. they know what theyre doing. questions answered, free shipping, they had in the mail 18hs after placing an after hour order. pretty stoked.

 

So, as I understand it, what you really wanted out of all this was an excuse to buy some new tools.

In all seriousness though this made me laugh so hard when I saw it. Perfect fit for the situation 10/10.

 

At least you didn't try to use Harbor freight easy outs. I learned my lesson breaking an HF extractor inside a broken exhaust stud on my Harley a week before a trip to the Dragon's Tail. Was forced to pull the head and use cobalt and titanium bits to drill around the hardened extractor then punch it out. Drilled out the rest of the bolt and tapped a new exhaust stud in the night before departing.

 

Harbor Freight tools are the devil.

For anything hardened, I recommend using Dremel diamond bits or their Tungsten carbide bits. They work awesome even on the hardest of materials.

 

Meh I’ve broken a few snap on easy outs when it shouldn’t have happened. And that was on first use of the tool

 

Yuck. All in the metallurgy.

 

Anyone run long tube headers and cats downstream? I don't think I'm man enough to go catless. I have equal length on an old track car and the venturi tends to pull fumes from any gaps. Man, makes me cry accelerating WOT

 

I tried shorties and catless on my Lexus. Lasted about a day before I ordered high flows. Even with the extra long wheelbase I was getting fumes at the front seats.

Course, neither of our setups is CA legal.
