Sanity Check Thread (new tires, 5100's, TSB)

Currently 100% bone-stock 09 4x4 DC TRD Off-Road w/16" rims and 265 70 16's.

JUST ordered:

P265 75 16 Hankook Dynapro ATM's
Front 5100's

I have not had the TSB done in the rear yet, but I'm still under warranty.

What order should I do this in?

It sounds like Toyota has to do a FULL alignment when they do the TSB, so it seems like I should be able to get that part for free. .

Should I just take it to Toyota and have them do everything? Will they bitch/moan about non-stock tires/shocks?

Should I have the tires and shocks mounted elsewhere and then get to Toyota ASAP for rear TSB and full alignment?

Sounds like typical labor for shocks is ~$50 at tire/suspension places, and mount/balance ~$15/wheel. If Toyota isn't a rip for service I'm tempted to just have everything done there.

Also. . I'm leaning towards .85 on the 5100's since it seems like the only setting almost guaranteed not to introduce vibes, but I like the look of 1.75 I've seen on other trucks with rear TSB. Chime in there as well if you can.

Most Toyota places won't do them. Unless you are going to keep them at no lift. If you are going to adjust it to a lift setting, they will probably give you a hard time.

 

Will they do the alignment for the tsb with them already on you think?

 

Yep they did for me.

 

Fitzgerald Toyota in Gaithersburg, MD did the leaf spring TSB and put on the 5100's, and did a 4 wheel alignment for me. This is my first Toyota and so far I've been very impressed with them and their work.

I'm ready for a new set of tires and I'm probably going to have them do the work and check the alignment.

 

I had Eibach coils and 5100's on all four done in the morning and then drove my truck later that day to Toyota and had TSB rear and alignment. The boxes of the old shocks and springs were in the back seat still and they didn't say a word.

 

They did for me as well, no questions asked. Just bought the hankooks as well, live em so far

I had a real hard time deciding on the tires. Was between:

Cooper Discoverer ATR
Hankook Dynapro ATM
Goodyear Duratrac's

Loved the look of the duratracs but $200 more and don't do enough off road to justify. Dynapro's were darn cheap and seemed at least a step up from the HORRIBLE BF deathtrails. Coopers were in the mix since I had em on my 98, but the hankooks had such great reviews.

The rear leaf TSB is not an automatic even if still under warranty, many dealers want to "test" it themselves to determine if it needs to be done, and it can be a hassle. I wouldn't count my chickens yet. If you have a legitimate complaint that helps

 

I figured I'd start with, "every time I have anything more than groceries back there I'm hittin off the bumpers, this can't be right".

If bottoming-out is really that bad for your truck on such a light load, you will probably have no issue with getting the TSB done, i think guys on here suggest mentioning, "harsh ride", "safety concern" and you're probably good to go for updated 4 leaf pack. The dealers in my area are very suspicous and want to recreate the "harsh ride" issue instead of basing the repair solely on the customer stating that his truck is covered by the TSB. I haven't even loaded my truck yet to check for this problem, but i did mention it to a service tech and he was quick to point out that not all trucks have this leaf spring issue and that's why it's a TSB instead of a recall. That seems to be true to a certain extent. Search the threads on this subject and you find guys here hauling 1000 lbs with no problems, others hitting bump stops with only 300 lbs.

Anyway, I recently called my dealer to complain about the harsh ride under load and he ordered the leaf springs for me no questions asked. I guess it depends on the dealer.
Regarding the front Billstein setting, has anyone had problems with vibrations with the fronts set at 1.75" and the rear leaf TSB done? This is the set up I would like to go with

 

I called my local dealership (Bennett Toyota - Allentown, PA) last week, and went in for my appt. today.

When I called, I said, "When I haul anything more than a few hundred lbs., the rear performs as if it's overloaded, and often bottoms out on the stops over bumps, etc.". I additionally told them, "I looked online to see what options I had for an AAL or stiffer aftermarket suspension for the rear, and found info about a different spring pack avail via a TSB from Toyota." I was polite, but to the point.

They were a little confrontational on the phone when I setup the appt., saying they had never heard of this issue with the rear, and seemed to brush it off a bit.

When I went in this morning they were exceptionally polite, and asked if I had any other issues with the truck.

I pointed out that when I'd washed it the other day I noticed some light rust starting on the rear bumper, and that the mudflaps were far too long.

The gladly took down all the info I offered, and I headed off to work.

About 5 hours later I got a call to come back and they went through the following:

They will replace the rear springs and U-bolts. The tech jotted down the following info:

48210 04570 RH Leaf Spring
48220 04210 LH Leaf Spring
90117 A0005 U Bolt (x4)

They are also replacing the bumper, and stated there's an "update" for that as well. . .

Tech jotted down:

52151 04061 R Bumper
52163 04021 RH end
52164 04021 LH End


They expect to have the springs next week. So far I'm very pleased with their response.

They of course told me there's nothing that can be done with the mudflaps, but I'm just gonna trim them. Didn't hurt to ask right?

Well, I had complained it wasn't even two years old yet, and already had rust starting on it. I pointed out I'd be happy to take a painted one if it was an option and would last longer, but he stated, "It's actually an updated part", and added I should throw a coat of wax on it when I get it back to help protect it.

Had the rear leaf TSB done yesterday. The dealership was good about it. No questions asked. I am happy with the ride. As many people on here have said it does feel more "trucklike" but very stable. Not bouncing around or anything like that. Next the front 5100' s set at 1.75".

I noticed a very small bit of rust on my rear bumper on the passenger side recently. I will be asking the dealer about replacing that also. Hopefully they are just as easy going about that too

 

I just said my truck was bottoming and performing poorly with a load, gave them the TSB# and the next day it was all installed, no questions.

 

My dealer is fighting with me about the TSB. I complained about the harsh ride, they told me to put some bags of concrete in the bed & bring it back. Went to Home Depot, put in 360 lbs of bagged concrete, went back & service manager told me, "that's not a f***ing load!!!" So now, I will go back to home depot, get about 1000 lbs bagged concrete & try again. With 360 lbs, ride was harsh & bottoming out. Hopefully they will do it this time.

 

Wow. . you're a patient guy. . I think the moment they were making it out of "my" pocket I would have let them know I'd be contacting Toyota corp. to determine if that was the best course of action. .

 

Thanks. They really are trying my patience with that & clutch issues. I was told by a service writer that the service manager is under fire by Toyota for too many warranty claims from their dealership. I just may call Toyota corp before I get more concrete. At least Home Depot is just across the freeway from them so it's easy to return the concrete. Service manager wanted to know how I found out about the TSB fix, I referred him to this site and other Toyota sites, also have friend who had TSB done on his 07 in Sacramento & how it transformed his truck.
