Doing some reading, I see more happy customers than negatives. I have been going back and forth on getting a KDMAX PRO tune for a brand new 2022 or wait. Is there any downside to getting tuned right away for a brand new Tacoma?

I would drive it for a while first then make the decision. How these trucks drive seems to vary from truck to truck, so give it a little time before you decide.

Why not drive it around for awhile and see how you like it. If it shows symptoms of a crappy factory tune and you don’t like it, by all means, get the Pro tune. BTW, no downside in getting tuned right away either. :D

Good point. I just haven't seen much or I haven't searched the right terms to see if there was some downside getting it tuned right away.

Everyone that experiences the stock tune, then goes to the KDMAX tune, appreciates the improvements more than those who do not. Even though there is no downside to getting the tune right away, I think you should at least drive it on the stock tune long enough to experience the weird, irrational shifting, lack of throttle response, and lack of power. It will not take long and you will be pleasantly surprised with the KDMax-Pro tune!

For those of us who only drive manual gearboxes, what should we look out for in the stock tune which is remediated by the KDMax tunes?

that's different for the various different calibrations that come from the factory. the original calibrations from'16 & '17 were so awful that they would speak for themselves to answer your question. my truck is a 2017 so i can't comment on current factory tune issues. but beyond issues the performance is noticeably stronger.

The only downside is that you don’t spend enough time suffering on the stock tune to appreciate how good the Pro tune is :)) I would say do it as soon as you can. Got mine done today on a ‘22 Offroad at 700 miles and it’s totally worth it.

I’ve had the tune for awhile now and it’s still amazing. I was wondering though, if down the road Toyota releases a tsb or something, is it possible the dealer service could revert it back to the factory tune?

If the dealer does happen to flash an update then yes, the tune will be overwritten. But that is very VERY unlikely unless you bring the truck in there with a complaint that the update is supposed to fix.

IF there was a TSB update---yes it would overwrite the tune when it was flashed to your truck.

If a new TSB came out, I would wait until the new ECU ID is supported by Vftuner before getting the update. Then we would be able to put the KDMax-Pro tune back on the truck.

Was thinking about gearing up to 4.88 and have the stock gear pro tune. Is it okay to run the tune with the new gears until I can get updated or update it prior to the install?

Yes you can run the PRO with stock gears setting with your 4.88's. Then you can get the tune updated to a 4.88 PRO tune file when you can.

You folks out there with heavy trucks/overlanders loaded with gear:
Ask your KD Group tuner about the Pro+ tune.
K&D simply took the KD Pro and altered the shift points.
I’ve been on it for about 400 miles in two days. LOVE IT.
    I’ve got a mid-heavy truck.
My experience with fuel economy from Pro to Pro+ is pretty much the same.

It’s definitely NOT for everyone. Don’t jump on it if you’re not a heavy truck.
Stock and lighter to mid weight trucks should stick with Pro.
It seems likely to me that lighter trucks would suffer a drop in fuel economy with Pro+.

I tuned a guy today with a pretty heavy truck to Pro+ (who admittedly drives like a maniac):

Obviously he’s exaggerating about the V8’s, but you get the point
Though he actually may not be

There is a power surge (some call it rev hang) around 3500 to 4000 rpm. The engine feels constricted until it hits that rpm. The tune gets rid of that makes the acceleration linear. 1st to 2nd in particular is night and day and is worth the price of admission.
