Does anyone have any feedback on the differences or trouble I might run into on trying to put a soft topper for a 2016 plus onto my 2006? Found a really good deal on one locally....

They will mount up to the bed but the measurements are not the exact same. It will sit higher than the roof as well as not contouring to the back wall of the cab very well.

Sure thing. Same goes for camper shells I believe. Yes they will fit but not seamlessly...

I thought it was the opposite. Meaning that the 2nd gen ST sits higher than the roof when installed on a 3rd gen.

The other issue is the back flap. They're designed differently due to the size and design of the top of the tailgate (2nd gen is very narrow, 3rd gen is wide).

Well, I'm stubborn....bought it off the guy from Facebook. Got it for $450. Fits pretty decent to me and I think it will better once I tweak it a bit more. PXL_20220305_232831771.jpg

The 3rd gen soft topper actually fits better or sleeker on a 2nd gen then the appropriate 2nd gen topper. I had one briefly and had it set up,this way. All you’ll need is a straight bar for the tail gate window as opposed to the curved one used for a 3rd gen. Soft topper swears they are the same, and I believe them. However, they do fit different. There is a couple threads on this very topic. That’s how I found out the difference.

Curved bar is based on bed length, not gen. Short bed is curved, long bed is straight.

I honestly don’t know how you came to that. You may be correct. I just know the 3rd gen tacoma bed requires a curved bar. 2nd gens require a straight bar. Bed length has no matter on the tail gate…..edit, go to softtopper.com, look at the difference based on the 2 generation models.

I have a third gen softopper and it came with a straight bar for a long bed. I asked softopper why I didn't have a curved bar and that is what they told me. Where did you get your information?

Interesting. When I bought my 3rd gen topper, used. I called them as to what I needed to make it fit my truck (I had the curved bar). They told me to order the straight bar.

I have a tyger soft cover that I’ll give away if someone is willing to pay the shipping. No strings attached. Just need it gone.

How’d you get the topper to stop rubbing the 3rd brake light?

Honestly, if it did, I wasn’t aware of it. Never thought to see if it was rubbing and nothing indicated to me that it was.
